AOfiOSS THE CONTINENT. No. 12. Chicago, Nov. 4. One of the im pressions I got In looking over the now abaudoned World's fair grounds wan the thought that here Chicago had taken possession of many thouhaud acres of laud on short notice, and srxjnt twenty millions of dollars for pleasure to advertise the city and it is today the best advertised and bett known city in the world. Now all Is chaos and ruin except the art building. What a mighty ellort for bombast and amusement! Of course, there are educational and csthetical values lowing from the Columbian Exposition of Incalculable value. The dominant thought is however, that all that vast expenditure and the carrying of millions to and fro gave employment to much labor. No doubt but that u war would have come sooner but for tho work here supplied, Now, tho thought Is why sliull thousands of acres and twenty millions not he at command for some useful pur pose, as wdl as for pleusureV If ten thousand acres could be laid oil' In for lry hero In this prairie wluluof Jllluolf, It would not only give employment to llioiiHunda of persons now, hut for all time In tho future, hut It would benefit the fctiito it ik) provo u source of wealth. I attended one of the free lectures at the new Chicago Art Instl tute, given by George L. Bchreiber, who is also art lecturer at Armour In stitute. He lectures before largo and fashionable c'asses at Kenosha and elsewhere. The large lecture room was filled a few minutes after it waa opened. The lecture was the first of a course of twenty, the second course Mr. Schrei berls employed to deliver here in the inrgestart Institute in the new world After holding the attention of eeverai hundred art students for an hour, lit escorted them through the galleries l give practical eflect and illustration U his text. This is free educatiou in the arts to the masses of the people. Mr. Scbreiber Is animated by a thorough passion for bis life work, and has peni many yearsof hard work with tin best masters of Europe. He is a typi cal young American. GERTRUDE HOME. This is a beautiful new apartmenl buildiug on Forty-Seventh street, ueai Grand Boulevard. It is the Froebel Peslalnzzi house of the new world. A part of the woik or the Chlcigo Kind ergir en Institute, this Nome for the young women students of the Froebel -ystem, is peculiarly tilted for its pur pose. At a low price the most perfectly ap pointed suites and chambers are here supplied to the girls who come to a large city to become trained Kinder- gurtners. There arc no servants but nt o;rative kitciien, dining room and l.uiiinry, equipped with the latest con veiiieucies, a (lord opiortunlties for self- help and economy. The girls ane at C:I5, breakfast at 7, go to the institute down town at 8. In tho afternoon and evening, they can b?ur lectures on mtiefc, literature and art, or go at practical Kindergarten work in various .parts of the city. A girl once started cannot but go ahead and develop all that Is best in her and grow to be a useful and telf-sustaining woman. E. Hoker. Wipe it Out. Ed.
