This morn Idr we crossed trie line into North Dakota, entering the Bad Lands. The most natural Brcckenridgey agricult ural region of the United States. We wound down the channel of a dead wutercourae until wo came to pictur esque Medora. Where the Marquis de Mores established a million -dollar slaughter-houBo. His European killing place Is at Paris, where he sluughterf two-legged cattle. The enmora ladj took n snapshot of his residence on an elevated plateau, with the gray and red alkali bu tit's rising as a background and below in the bed of the stream u belt of brilliant yellow frosted cotton woods. It is in u mixed style of archi tecture a cross between a medieva castle and a cuttle shed, paiuted b bright barn rod color. All through the Bad Lands we saw bunches of cat tle and horses In good condition, and if the country can ever drop politics lone enough to let business revive even thi region may prosper. DAKOTA AND MONTANA. No one can ride through Montana and not catch tho Inspiration of its native grandeur and magnificent dis tances, its big brawny people, its won derful resources and its big-hearted cordial ways. There are evidences of depression in empty buildings and de ser.ed towns. Livingston has felt the pressure of ha I'd times, as Yellowstone National Park, the entrance to which is at this town, had not one visitor this year to fifty lost year or a hundred the year before. But its wonders are over-estimated, and Its extravagunt management is an outrage. As a tour ist's resort It is a cross between fraud and robbery. Until people can go away -from there feeling otherwise, than that ,they have been swindled and fleeced, .ttbey will continue to cry down the Park with much truth and with great effect. In Montana every vista is bounded by mountain chains, and you are eoldom or never out of sight of snowy ranges. In the Gallatin valley there are great reaches of the richest grain fields and alfalfa meadows, irri gated by streams of clear blue snow water running eternally from tho glaciers that-hang down from the Bides of the mountain twenty miles away. In Dakota the landscape is always bounded by the sky. Boundless roll ing prairies of grazing land are dotted with sheltered homesteads, gardens und grain fields. Nine or ten bushels ot wheat to the aore, now selling at 37 cents a bushel and oats a Jlght crop, does not leave much to get rich on. But all through North Dakota cattle bring fair prices and well-mauaged herds never fall to bring in a good lump of monoy, which will in time buy I nearly twice as much as ten years ago. Occasionally a deserted town, churches braced up with poles, brick blocks with one end wrenched off, or residences turnlug their basements up to eun, wind and rain show tho ravages of cyclones. Empty liquor bottles scat tered along the side or tho railroad traoks show we aro in a prohibition slate, Whether it Is hard times, tho Improved habits of the peoplo, or In creased toleranco in 'point of view, it seemed to us wo did not now uotlco nearly so much drinking going across tho continent as we did a few years ago, when last making the trip. For four days iu a crowded Pullman sleeper wo did not sco anybody tako a drink of Intoxicating liquor, Perhaps It was because the car was mostly tilled with women uud children, Not even In the dining oar did wo boo the light liquor drank, that was so common In former yours. We suspect the Imrd tiniva make the vlrluo of temperance n neces sity with many who formerly never thought of total ubdtlneuce, Hut (he Dakota uru permeated by strongly rellglnuu eoiilliiiunt, Between crop failure, U)huma und cyclone, expect log to be aUrviui to death or blown Mwuy, religion l kept well In tlm fore ground, If (hero Is only one (minted )lQUte Iu (own It l the mtnQmn All (lit falU III North DultoU I llml (lie KepubllcMim will weej (lie Ule, DoMoomoy l looked umii m m hud iJreuini Populltfril u a blight, A ( of light nmwmnl or Khhllow hrwlin. Portland and many other cities, where there has been great iuiusttce In the way property has beeu nseeMcd, are beginning to rebel and the tax payers are virtually taking the matter of equalization into their own hand?. Good results, are being attained, and better are sure to follow If the work can only be kept up. The good work Ih spreading, and the Journal hops to see not only better assessment' luws, but a more just enforcement of them. Ex-Senator Clmrlis B. Furweil of UhlciEo says," without denial oreq ji ocatfou, that unless the outrageous (lif crimiuatlous made in the assessments between tho rich and the poor clnsfch of that city ato ended theio will he a condition of actual warfure. "I think that the time is approaching," bujh he, "when poor men will revolt .riot, burn and commit anarchistic uciioni if these unjust discriminations do not cease." Senator Furwell dnws a vi id plcluio of how the rich men of Uliidgo escape the assessment of their pro erties by the bribery of assessors, and how eucii purchused immunity adds to Hie burdens of the poorer classes of tax payers. THE DAY'S OEEGON NEWS. Gathered by Telegraph and From Exchange s. The work of surveying the Willam ette river bus been bpgun. A lire at Grants P.isa Tuesday morn ing destroyed property to the amount of $1500. Geo. T. Hall & Son, of Eugene, haye purchased 100 bales of hops this week, paying from 4 fo 0 cents per pound for them. The Dalles pays the highest price for wheat of any other place east of the mountains. While at other points only 25 and 20 cents per bushel has beon paid, the market at The Dalle) has never fallen below 30 cents. At a meeting of the Eugene board of trade, held last Monday evening a com mittee of one was appointed to corres pond with the company, who are pre paring to put up a sugar beet factory in the valley, und If possible to secure its location at Eugene. A carload of prunes were shipped from Hood River to Omaha, Neb., two weeks ago, the receipts of which were $200.34. The receipts of the car will just about pay for the picking and packing, with nothing left, to pay for tho fruit. Fifteen boxes of apples were shipped in the same car by Mr. Hill, of Belmont, which did not sell for enough to pay freight and commission, leaving him in debt 38 cents. HOW TO CLOTHE CHILDREN. Tho puokors in many a mother's forehead aro deepened as she studies how to dress her boys and girls iu a re spoctablo manner on the small amount that is available. A minister's wife In a small town near Salem was confronted by this dis couraging situation, but her .woman's wit and a few 10 cent packages of dia mond dyes solved tho problem, and soon haudsomo clothes were pvolved from u pile of odds and ends.
