Gen. and Mrs. W. H. Byars came np
from Portland last evening to take in
the state fair aa well as their numerous
friends. Tbe general returns this eve
ning, while Mrs. B. will stay orer aev

Hon. C. P. Yales of Washington
county is in the dty visiting tbe fair.
He is an old newspaper man having
once served on the New York Herald,
and having traveled all over the old
world as a correspondent. He is now
a farmer and expressed a very favor
able opinion of our state fair. He will
make one of our most useful memberr.
He Is a conservative and Intelligent
man.
House Stoles. Yesterday after
noon Mrs. H. Bchntt, of Sublimity,
drove in to attend tbe fair, and visit
relatives. She putt up tbe borse in an
old barn at tbe home of her sister, Mrs.
Beck, in Simpson's addition and spent
the night at tbe home of her daughter,
Mrs. J. L. Mitchell. This morning it
was discovered that ber buggy was
gone. The thief was evidently familiar
with tbe neighborhood, for he took
Mr. Boullliard's pony and got a bar
new at tbe Bbedeck place. Sheriff
Knight has been notiSed and a sharp
lookout Is being kept for tbe IhM, al
though some well grounded suspicions
are rife as to the calprit
