quickness characteristic of Mormon
leaders, I he surveys have beeu made,
the estimates complied and tbo re
sources of the country fully investi
gated. The work Is In such an advanced
state that two corps of engineers arc
here and ready to bo used for construe

to be built extends from Salt Lake

Pacific connection in the Los Angeles

with the Atchison & Topeka in
Southern CallfornIa, then this Utah

Atchison & Topeka from the Needles

the statehood bill is signed

the Union Pacific will be seen running
south westerly fiom Salt Laho towards
he coast country, but stopping short in
the midst of the Sierras, The Mormons
have laid out n route which Is a marvel
to tho engineers who have Beeu profllec,
They parallel the ridges, Instead of
crossing thorn. They have tangents CO
md 70 miles long, demonstrating that
what appears to be the longest route is
really the shortest way to the coas.
These coal fields will be p'ercod by

Mormon church, is the active represen
tative of Zion In this project. He is
here and in charge of the lobby which
has put the statehood bill into the pres
dent's hands so smoothly.

en" to babies, but that baby was ono of
that irresistible sort that laughs aud
makes fun of you, gurgling out nil sorts
of disjointed criticisms of your porsonal

would be simply unbearablo could you
but understand it.
How such a delightful baby could

inexplicable.
As you looked nt her hard nnd un
womanly face which not even her
baby's smile could f-of ten you involun
tarily pitied tho child that some day
must turn to her for sympathy and holp.
Theso observations weio just complet
ed when tho car stopped, and sho step

Sho wns plninly dressed in a gown of
dark brown, mado of some rich corded
material, edged with fur. Her coloring
was of that warm, rich tint that ouo
finds in tho women of tho south, with
golden brown hair and oyes. Altogether

At that moment tho car stopped, aud
sho hurried to tho door.
Sho wns not so quick, however, but
that tho other mother caught her hand,
her plain, kind, motherly faco all alight
with a divino impulse of generosity.
"I get off here," sho said. "Won't
yon cany my baby n littlo way? My
arms nro very tired."
