"Wo cannot forget," said the man who moved from tho suburbs, "the vans wo moved in nor tho men who moved us. Tho whole household was active early that morning waiting for tho vana Tho main road by which thoy would ap proach ran parallel to tho Btreet in which wo lived and in plain sight. Soon after 7 o'clock wo saw them coming, three of them, each drawn by four horses, and all well closed up, a decid edly orderly and business looking pro cescion. They swung around through a cro s street and down our street and halted near thohouso at 7:10. Thoy had told us at tho ofllco that the vans would bo thcro at 7 o'clock. Inasmuch as they had had 12 miles to coino and it had rained tho night beforo 7:10 didn't seem like a half bad bluff at it "A man camo down and located tho house, and then tho two head vans camo and backed up to the walk in front At ouo side of tho house thcro was a drivo way which ran back past tho rear of tho house, with a loop thero around a littlo oval grass plat. Thero was nouo too much room in this driveway, which was not designed for four horso teams, but when tho rear van camo down tho driver swung his leaders and caino in at it with tho largo confldenco of a man who has a good team and knows how to handle it. Ho rounded tho oval and halted with his team headed toward tho street and tho rear end of tho van on a lino with tho rear of tho houso. When tho vans wero all in position, the horses were blanketed, and then tho men wero ready. "Thcro wero t-ix men altogether, and thoy were all powerful, ablebudkd men. Tho house was a 2 story Queen Anne. Tho men stripped it in two hours and without any fuss or commotion whatever. At 0 :20 tho last padlock snap ped on tho last van door, and tho driv ers mounted to their seats and hauled out into tho road again, onco more in line. Then all hands settled down in their seats, and every thing was ready for tho btart Tho great arks wero very heavy now, and it was no light work to movo them. Thero was a littlo pictur esque plunging at tho start, but they wero good teams, every one, and thoy soon had tho vans in motion, and after that they walked ol? with them as though thoy wero shoeboxes on wheels. A few moments later wo saw them once more out on tho main road, moving now toward tho city. "Four hours later wo caught sight of them again. Wo wero then on tho train bound for tho city and approaching near it. Wo saw tho vans on a road at sqibo littlo distance from tho railroad. Thoy wero as well closed up as a wagon train would bo under escort in an enemy's country and moving forward. "Not very long afterward wo stood on tho stops in tho land of brick and mortar and saw tho procession, htill well closed up, appear around the corner. They camo up at a trot. It took a littlo moro timo to unload than to load, but not much.. Soon hea ,l,.tf last padlock snap again, this time on the last of the empty vans. Onco more the procession lined np, moved off and disappeared. "And left us to settle. It is some thing of a job to settlo, as thoso who havo tried it know, but if anything could mako that work seem lighter it would bo tho exhilaration of moving in tho modern way." New York Sim. Too Much For Him. General Mccrscheidt-Hullesseni, an old and expeiicnced ofllcer of tho bluff typo, has several times differed with Emperor William's criticism of parades and maneuvers, and tho general did not tako pains to conceal hia opinions. Ouo night tho emperor and tho general met at a ball, and it happened that tho same forenoon tho emperor had again criti cised tho general's troops, doprecating tho veteran officer's want of coolness. During tho evening tho emperor joking ly remarked to tho general,- who is a bacholer: ' 'My dear general, you want to becomo less excited, and," pointing to tho la dies, ho added, "you ought to marry." "I beg your majesty's pardon, " ro torted tho general, "but I beg to bo ex cused. A young wife and a young em peror would bo too much for me." Berlin Letter. A Book's Quaint Title. A year or two ago thero flrst appeared in Germany a littlo book entitled "Darf dio Frau Deukcn?" ("Ought Woman Bo Allowed to Thin!:?"). It went through a number of editions in n short time, a raro thing to happen in tho fatherland, at least in this department of literature. Though small and without nuy now ideas or issues, it seemed to havo had a decided effect in winning favor for tho woman rights movemout, at present oc cupying tho best minds of a nation as conservative ns tho German. The WTitor, a lady, attempts to show that woman is not cieated for man, but for her calling, and to work out her own destiny on equal terms with man. Henco nil educa tional apparatus and institutions ought to bo opened to her. Baltimore Sun. The Statue of the Angel Moroni. A statuo of tho angol Moroni sur mounts tho capstone of tho tower of the great Mormon templo at Salt Lake City. Tuoflguro is of glgautio proportions, bo ing 12 feet 54 inches in height It re minds ono of a picture of Gabriel blow ing tho trumpet on the last day and is supposed to represent tho Mormon angel bringing tbo gospel to tho children of men. Tho incandescent lamp above tho angel's head is 222 feet from tho pave ment below. St Louis Republic. An Anthem. This definition of an anthem is no credited to a British workman, Uader taking to explain the meaning of tho word to an im uiring friend, he began, "Well, if I said 'Bring me a pickax,' that would not bo an anthem, bat if I said 'Bring bring bring bring me the pickpick pickax bring me tho pick pickax' that would b SH & tbew. Lite In a C.r. c, Look Like a Man and Lives by Koliblng Tanners. Over in Washington county, near tho lino cf Morccr, leigns a being which, man or beast, mjtilles all tho neighbor hood. For months tho housewives have missed their chickens eggs, milk, meat from meathou'-.es and half grown pigs and young lambs. At flrst all efforts and schemes to catch the guilty one proved of no avail. Joseph Ewalt arose ono morning before day mid went to the springhonse, a hundred yards distant from his dwelling. His wife and son, becoming alarmed at his continued ab sence, went in f-earch of him and found him at the door of tho springhouso in a faint Thoy restored him to conscious uess, and ho told them ho had seen a man beast, and that ho ran out of tho springhouso as ho opened tho door; that .10 had gicar, long white hair hanging down from his head and face that was as coarso as a horse's mane His legs wero covered witli hair, nnd tho only article of i lothing ho wore was a piece of sheepskin ocr tho lower portion of his body, reaching nearly to his kneos. When it btvani' uoi cd nround that Ewalt had s-een a man best, sober head ad men began to et a plan to catcli the monster. In tin neighborhood, near tho mouth of D cp creek, is a cavo ot considerable proportions, and tho natu ral conclusion was that thero would be tho place to find their game. Early Sunday moiniug Eph Boston and his sons, Tom and James, saw tho object of their watch walking in a half gallop, half run for their barn. Not withstanding tho men wero armed, they wero badly frightened, and after thoy saw tho object enter tho barn all three wero afraid to enter to try to capture tho tcrriblo looking creature. Thoy kept hid and wero ndt seen by tho monster, standing in a half erect posi tion nearly C feet His feet wero like tho paws of a bear or brute, with long claws. His hands also wore like thoso of a felino more thau a human. Beforo tho men could como to some action or get over their fright tho creature came out of tho barn in the same half gallop run gait and made for tho creek. By this timo tho men started in safe pur suit. Tom Boston foolishly shot at it, and tho creatuio half turned and glanced at them, increasing his gait, but never dropping tho threo large chickens ho held in his claws. Tho Bostons man aged to keep in sight of tho creature for only a half mile or so, they vowing ho ran swifter than a horse. Just as thoy got to tho top of a hill nbout BOO yards off they wero rewarded by seeing tho brnto mau turn, with a wild, scared look, glauco around nnd enter tho cava The men went to tho mouth of tho cave, but would not enter. They saw feathers, bones, eta, scattered around tho entrance. They returned home and reported what thoy had seen, and Tues day they, with a half dozen other men, wont to tho cavo and made . a partial survey, proceeding in several hundred yards. They saw fresh indications of habitation by bones, feathers, pieces of calf and sheep skin being strewn around Tho passages grew smaller and dwin dled, and no one of the party would enter alone, though one, Joo Smith, went in 80 or 40 feet, when the mast unearthly yell tho men over heard greet ed them. They wero good, stout men, but they coycd leforo that yell and beat a hasty retreat to the main passage of the cavern, but after consultation they agreed it would not do to kill or be killed, and they gave up their search for anotlrer time. A simplo and touching sight might have been witnessed in a Paris church tho other day during tho celebration of a f ashionablo and largely attended wed ding. In a corner of the edifice, obsorved by fow, stood a youthful couplo a mulatto girl and her equally dusky sweetheart Tho two appeared intently watching tho ceremony going on in front of tho altar and copied each move ment mado by tho brido and bridegroom whom tho priest was making man and wife. Ab they knelt down, so did tho other couplo kneel, and when the fault lessly attired bridegroom placed tho ring on his blushing bride's fliigor the young mulatto did likewiso, only his ring was of metal, nnd his brido was less fair. At length, when tho procession emerged from tho church, tho humble couple fol lowed, looking as if thoy thought they wero quite as much married as their moro fortunate brethren. It transpired that such was indeed their "belief. The twolovors, who are "models" known to many artists hero, had no money whoro with to pay tho priest or tho registrar's fees, so had thought a wedding at sec ondhand would bo just as effectual and cost them nothing. Paris Correspond ent A Von JJulow Rehearsal. When in Munich eomo years ago di recting tho Wagner operas, a woman of bociety asked tho late Hans vVm Bulow ono evening to bo allowed to attend tho rehearsal of tho orchestra on tho follow ing day. Bulow replied that it would give him great pleasure to havo her pres ent later in tho week, when tho orches tra had played of tener. However, on the following day Bulow caught sight of her in tho theater as ho took his baton in hand. He stopped tho music, held a hurried conversation with ouo of tho members of tho orchestra, and then as cended to his placo again. He flourished his baton, and one instrument began to sound. Ho continued to beat tho air, and tho instrument continued to play only threo different notes. For five min utes this was kept up, tho other musi cians remaining silent. Tho poor lady became half crazy in tho courso of time, and in disgust at Bulow and Wagner left tho room. The rehearsal was then continued. San Francisco Argonaut For Sleeplessness.
