That Was the Republican Demonstra
tion at Salem Saturday Night.
The Republican demonstration at the
capital city Baturdny was the moat
magnificent campaign gathering ever
held hero. At least five thousand peo
ple participated. Four carloads of uni
formed Republicans came up on a
special train from Portland. A thou
sand stalwart Repullcans were in from
the country towns. Cities like Bilver
ton, Woodburn, Jeflerson and other
towns tent full delegations. It was
perfectly eyident that not everybody
has Joined the People's party in Ore
gon. The procession reached around
four sides of our large squares. The
excitement did not die away until after
midnight. It was so great it was car
ried oyer in gentle reflections into the
Sabbath uud more than ono congrega
Ion was found listless and uuappro
iallvo at tho Bunday morning service.

charge deserve great credit.
Ohrls. Houck Drowned.
Satuntay evening, while on routo to
Balem, Chris. Houck, a passenger on
tho steamer Altonu, fell overboard and
wan drowned at a point In the river

from here. At tho time he went over

board lifeguard ut tho foot of the stairs.
Immediately upon touching the water
Houck was sucked under the bout and

found until it comes to the surface.

service on tho Willamette, Houck
was a dingle man, 110 years or age, and

and Mrs. Sampson Jones, on Liberty
street, and will remain several weeks.
Mr. Cooper is a nephew or Mr. Jones,

The twelfth annual convention of
the W. C. T. U. met at 8:30. Ah is the
custxmi of this organization, the Hrst half
hour was passed In reverent bowing
down before the Almighty God.

R. Rings called the convention to order.
Rev. E. B. Sutton was introduced to
the convention by Mrs. Rlggs and gave
a stirring, earnest, forcible address. He
