H, MrMabati placed an attachment upon the Oregon Independent for $700 today, wbiob he alleges is wages due him for work from the 9tb day of March, 1603, until the 10th day of March 1801. Sheriff Knight served the writ Saturday morning, and the office was placed in the hands of a keeper, pending a settlement of the cape. H. J. Bigger has been secured by the plaintiff, and Wm. Holmes has been retained by the defendant as attorneys. Following are the stockholders of the Independent Publishing company, who -re Included in the attachment: A. Strong, Balem, J. H. Fletcher, Salem, L. H. McMahan, Salem, Judge J. B Hubbard, Maclr-ay; Judge W. C. Hub- ard, Salem; Cl.as. Scott, Woodburn; . W. Dlmick, Hubbard; W. E. Her, Butteviile; Wm. H. Egan, Salem; D. E. Swank, Aumsville; J. W. Jory, Salem; H. L Bents, Butteviile; L. W. Guiss, Woodburn; J. B: Heinuger, Sacramento, Cal.; W. H. Holmes, Salem; Geo. T. Cllne, Woodburn. The defendant claims in his attach- uent that he only received since Ills ouuection with the paper about $200; tiat ho was to receive $75 per month for hU services as editor, which would -itlll leave $700 due him. On the 15 of January.1894, The Daily Indeendeut was purchased from the stockholders of the ludepeuduut Pub lishing company' and has since been ublished by a different concern. This suit between Mr.McMahanand the Oregon Independent does not interfere :n auy way whatever with The Daily Independent, as neither Mr. McMahan nor any of the stockholders of the Weekly have a dollar's worth of interest in it. It Is claimed by the defendants that the suit is merely a piece of spite work on the plaintiff's part, and thut.it .vlll be settled satisfactorily in a few days, ns tbey claim there is no ground upon which the plaintiff can base bis charges. Immediately before the attachment .vas served-a mortgage, held by D E. Swank, to the amount of $1,210 was foreclosed upon the otllce, aud Mr. Swank took possession by virtue of the chattel mortguge. It is a point to be decided whether the attachment under these conditions Is legal or not. Bonds In the sum of $700 were furnished by the plalntitl. -villi T. II. Hubbard as iurety. This amount according to the law Is Just all that which U required; it being necessary to furnish bonds double tho umount which Issued for. The Prohibitionists.
