Bow the ttenntirat Rtliereal Pyrotechnic Dttplaya Are Produced. Many people bavo probably noticed tho phenomenon known as falling or shooting stars. Although they nro bo frequent, however, tho true ex planation of them, is not very widely known. Tho stars themselves are bo far off (so far indeed that tho ordi nary mind cannot grasp tho idea of their distance) that wo cannot ns cribo to them the long trains of light that we see so frequently in tho heav ens. Thero have been many ex planations given at one time or an other, ,bnt tho oho' faow generally nc cepted as tho result of closo investi gation is that tho phenomenon of shooting stars must be attributed to bodies entering our atmosphere. The stars that wo seo have no connection with "shooting stars." But, independently of tho great planets, thero exist in tho planetary regions myriads of small bodies which circulate about the. Bun in groups of sones Somo of these zones intersect tho' elliptic or earth's orbit and aro encountered "by tho earth in its annual revolution. It is these small bodies entering our atmosphere that produce what are called shoot ing stare. Thbro nro eovoral periods of the yeAr in which these zones of small planets aro so encountered, but tho two chief periods aro from about tho 10th and 13th of August and about tho samo timo in November. Iu tho first of the twq periods tho phenomenon has beep called St. Lawrence's rain, on account of- his festival falling on tho 10th of August. Tbcso brilliant lights were poetically looked upon by tho Irish Catholics as tho burning tears of tho venerated saint. Fow people, howovor, aro bo fortu nate as Humboldt, tho great explor er, who on tho ,12 th of Novorabor; 1709, whilo in Brazil was witness of a remarkablo exhibition of shooting stars. Ho relates that tho number of luminous bodies traversing the pky Was bo great that oho would have thought it was sojno magnificent dis play of firoworks a$ a prodigious height. Tho average height of theso. bodies at tho time of their entrance into our atmosphere ifl about 73 miles and at tho timo of their extinction 52 miles. Their velocity is about 85 miles a seo ond. Their weight bos also been as certained and has beon found to vary from two ounces to two hundred weight. Tho emallor ones, by the great "rapidity of their motion, are soon converted into heat of sufficient strength to changd them into incan descent vapor, and theso wo seo ns shooting or falling stars. Tho larger ones resist tho action of the atmos phere much longer, andBomo of them oven comploto their fall, pprhaps burst and spread masses of meteoric iron over largo areas. London Tit BitB. When Miiuulmnii ami II In Jon Fight. Tho odd foaturo in thoso riots is their immediato causo. This is al ways reported to bo "cow killing," but Mussulmans kill oxen all tho year round for food, and so do tho Europeans. Tho griovanco is not that, but a display of tho old feeling of as cendancy on tho part of tho Mussul mans, -who on tho day of their fes tival kill a cow closo to a temple in token of high rohgious doflanco. Thou tho Hindoos, who do not mind about tho killings during tho rest of tho year, turn out armed, and thero is ti battlo royal, which but for tho English would in 21 hours, de velop into u religious war. Tho Eng lish, howover, teU tho polico to firo impartially ou both sects, and tho polico, though thoy aro thomselves MussuhntuiH nnd Hindoos, do it with dolight, and thero aro pcaconnd good fooling for the ensuing year, If that is not a stato of nffairs to puzzle Englishmen, thero is no such stato. But Irishmen would under stand it at onco. Tho armed polico in Ireland in a "religious" row plays just tho part it plays in India, only, boing English in discipline and arma ment, it takes lower lives. Loudon Spectator. No Siiiuini;. Admiral Field considers the average life of a seaman to bo a little over 12 years. February was named from Febrno, god of the dead. Iu old times it was tho last month of tho year. For ages there has been a flow of gems as of silver from Europe to India, and none ever returns, the people of India preferring a gem to any other form of investment. The rosin of commerce is u very dirty mass at first. It is purified by meltingit, and then, boiling for somo minutes iu a solution of chromic acid with twico its weight of sulphuric ncid, it U washed with ammonia water and is then ready for trade.
