members of the house were unaccount
ed for when the house assembled today
and indications are the deadlock will
be broken before the end of this session.
After reading the journal the Sergeant-at-nrms
reported all except seven of the
members, aside from those excused on
account of illness or cu the way to the
capltol aud deputies have been sent for

A Public Land Decision.
Washington, D. C, Feb. 21. Sec
retary Smith has approved the draft of
a circular which in soon to be issued,
governing applications for right of way
over public .lauds for canals, ditches
and reservoirs. The right is held to
extend only to construction and no
public timber or material will be al
lowed to be taken or used for repair or
improvement.
Quite a Plurality.
Philadelphia, Feb. 21. Pennsyl
vania, with ten counties to hear from,
gives Galusha A. Grow, Republican
candidate for congress-man-at-iarge,
$140,478 plurality.
When the returns are alii in it is be
lieved Grow's plurality will be nearly
160,000, the largest in the history of
the state. The high water mark here
tofore was the plurality of 136,148
for Jackson for State Treasurer. Re
publican state chairman Guilkerson
claims the state by 176,000. In cities
the local republican ticket was elected
in nearly eyery instance. Suoh demo
cratic strongholds as Reading, York,
Allentown, Altoona, Sunburry and
Easton are swept Into the republican
column.
WOOD CHOPPERS OAUQHT
In a Fatal Snowslido in Ne
vada. Verdi, Nev., Feb. 21. About noon
yesterday, Ave wood choppers were
caught in a snow slide in the moutalns
lire miles from here. One of them,
Ed. Edes, was pinioned In the snow,
where be had lain over twenty-four
hours, in a terrific wind and snow
storm. His bead was caught between
two timbers and pierced by u protrud
ing nail. He was unconscious when
taken out, and hopes are entertained of
bis recovery. Names of other unfort
unates are Tom Thrasher, M. S.
Wheeler, Mlchuel Warner, aud Leon
ard Nelson, all of Bono, Nevada. Thoy
are supposed to bs dead.

Paris, Feb. 21 a bomb exploded
in a smull hotel ou Rue St. Jucqucs.
The bomb was left hi a room which
two strangers engaged thti tluy before
and who did not return. The landlady
discovered the bomb and sent for the
police. Meanwhile the laudlady and
two other lodgers entered the room to
investigate, when the explosion occur
ed. The room In which the bomb was
placed was completely wrecked, aud
eyery window of the house was shatter
ed. The two lodgers aud the laudlady
were badly Injured. A bomb similar
to the one that exploded In tho hotel
on Rue St. Jacques was fouud Id
another smull hotel at 47 Fuuborgdt.

damage was done. It is belloved a
plot Is being carried out to cause ex
ploslous in hotels in dlflerent parts of
the city. A close search of the hotels
is made by the police.
EXPERIMENT WITH A IIOMB
Paris, Feb. 21. M. Glrard, thechief
of the municipal laboratory, made a
proposal that the bomb found by M.
Dresch be exploded by electricity In
the place where It was found, In order
that he might study the effects of the
explosion, When everything was
ready for the explosion every window
of the surrounding bouses was packed
with spectators. There was a sudden
detonation like the explosion of a
cannon. The room was found com
pletely wrecked and filled with tho
odor of picric acid. Projectiles, bob-
nails and bits of zinc were scattered all
over. The bomb was evidently
splendidly made. Madame Calabresl
was injured mortally by tho explosion

She received a terrible wound In the

Vienna Anarchists.
Vienna, Feb. 21. Several anarchist
prisoners have pleaded guilty, while
others have ludlgnantly denied they
were anarchists. One prisoner betrayed
the fact that there was an arrangement
between them that whoever told the
real truth with regard to their Inten
tions would be shot by bis comrades.
Elaborate Funeral.
London, Feb. 21. The funeral of
Anarchist Rourdin, who died from In
juries received from the explosion of
some chemicals, with which, It la said,
he intended to blow up Greenwich ob
servatory, will take place Friday,

elaborate demonstration.

has sued Prior Adebclm Odermatt, of
the Order of Ht. Ronedict nt Mt. Angel,
for wages and damages, while in tho
order. Ford and Kaiser appear for tho
Prior, who is present In court. The
plaintiff Is also present.
This is an important suit, as it In
volves the right of a member of a
religious order to suo for compensation
while engaged under vows for life.
The suit was begun last summer, and
went to trial before Judge Burnett at 8
p. m. yesterday to following Jury:

Plaintiff Rell aa founded on a contract,
by which he gavo his labor for ten
years, or for life, for certain considera
tions, to-wlt, to be kopt in health or
siokness and religious consolation for
life. He was maltreated and finally
ejected from tho order by one Fathar
Loo, who is now in Europe. His state
ments are admitted In evldenco as
though he were here. He was the
Brother In charge, and counsel claimed
was a violent man, of Improper temper
to be at the head of such an Institution;
that he was finally removed for his In
compatibility of temper; that if Roll
bad been properly treated he would be
still in the order; that plaintiff kept
bit vowa and was entitled to compensa
tion. The suit la for $1600 for wages
