Not tbis afternoon, sir. I'm very sorry, but that's the orders. Wo bave to be very careful with her, sir. There hasn't been anybody in it for full two hours," said the man at the gate. "But it's one of the advertised at tractions, of the .Midway, and I in sist," said Mr. Douglass. Ho had al ready been in tho Ferris wheel once beforo und had not meant to return to it, but circumstances were too strong for him, und here he was, ready to pay but unable to get a ticket "Insist or not," said tho man at tho gate, "you can't get in if you want to ; we can't let you in if we want to. The wheel is sulky and has been turning slow and ugly like that since noon today." "But I leave the city tonight," said tho tutor, "and I will not leave with out another ride in the great wheel." "Very well," said the man, turning on his heel, "get in if you can. The machinery is out of order, and wo can't stop tho wheel maybe you can, and ho walked off whistling "Comrades. ' Tho man's indifference roused Mr. Douglass. "We'll see," he said, "whether I 'won't havo ono more ride on the Ferris wheel." After a brief glance round him his eye caught tho sign of the Bedouin encampment, Rushing toward it, he thre'w a, $20 goldpiece upon the counter, told the attendant to keep the change and was soon in earnest conference with tho Arab sheiks. He ' gavo each a golden double eagle, and they bowed low. "Allah be praised. Tho white chief's will shall bo donel" they exclaimed. Then without losing a moment the three hurried to the great Ferris wheel, which still wont painfully, jerkily about, with a low growl that boded mischief. " But if the wheel was out of temper, so was Ma Doug lass, and. saying "Ready 1" to the Arabs he placed himself between them, one grasping each of his arms. "Let gol" the tutor called, and at the word the sinewy Arabs raised him from tho ground, and after ono or two preliminary swings hurled him through the air as if he had been a stone from a sling. Crash ! went tho tutor through tho glass, just scraping his way between two of tho iron bars, but landing safely in a car. "There 1" he cried, "I shall have another ride in the wheel 1" Op it went, over, down, and he came slowly toward whero tho Arabs stood in earnest talk. As he ap proached ono stepped forwurd. "Give more baksheesh 1" ho cried. "or" Mr. Douglass shook his head. Tho Arabs shook their fists. Ho laughed nt them. Then, raging with fury, one turned and said in Arabic to the other- "Seemo letim sloydl" No sooner aiJ than done. Each Bedouin seized ono of tho gigantic supports that upheld tho wheel and pulled with all his might. They were both well developed and had a wrong pull. With a long pull and a strong pull and a pull altogether they spruue out iho bupports, the great wheel fell from its place, and tho Bedouins, seeing tho mischief they had done and perhaps repent ujr of it, for they were ouly hasty. un wicked, leaped upon their price Ut donkeys and were, soon lost ill UiuBuburbs of Chicago. Unliko the rut, they did not return and havo pothing more to do with the story. But no doubt they often regretted, as they ,grow older, tho hasty out burst of tempor that was now to do so much mischief. For tho wheel, with Mr. Douglas an unwilling passenger, dropped to tho ground and rolled slowly up thp plaisanco. Its first victim was the Turkish vil lage, and when the wheel had passed tho village looked like a flat, hand colored map. Mr. Douglnss.as soon as ho saw what the Arabs wero at, had climbed out of tho car, and more like a spider than a tutor mado his way up to tho axlo, where he stood upright, walk ing" backward upon the axlo as tho wheel ran forward. From this well chosen perch ho could and did wit ness tho ensuing scene, which was de scribed by tho Chicago reporters as "Unusual." Tho Turkish village, being a trifle lumpy, diverted tho wheel but little, and tho next Assault was upon the cor ner of the Panorama of the Alps. The end of tho cauvas became entangled iu tho wheel aud was stretched from ono side to tho other, so that subse quently many thought that there had been a landslide when they saw the wheel pass. Mr. Hagenbeck's far famed animal show also came in for a share of dam age, tho wheel crushing ono corner of tho menagerie and picking up the small performing bear in such a way that ho was compelled to leap from car to car as each came upright and walk the wheel as if it were a circus ball. Ho was rescued unhurt, but considerably fatigued when tho wheel finally but it was not yet through. Glancing to the other side of tho plaisanco, tho Libbey Glass company's building was splintered into what ono of tho Irish dairymaids declared to be "smithereens," and tho monster rolled onward to where the Interna tional Dress and Costume exhibit was situated. Hero it broke in one side of tho building, and then catch ing sight of tho contents, with a shriek from every cog fled into, tho fair grounds, cutting its way through the Illinois Central and Intramural bridges with no more than slight crunches. The bear and Mr. Doug lass were still walking their tread mills, and the Panorama of tho Alps still decorated a whole side of the wheel. But tho great wheel, though out of temper, was not yet without feeling. It swerved asido upon reaching tho Woman's building, plunged into the lagoon, where, frightened by the squawking of tho swans, it shot mad ly toward the Government building. Probably it would havo gone entire ly through except for tho fact that tho department of justice lay direct ly in its course. It could not face tho stern portraits of judges upon its walls, and destroying only the big tree and a few other antiquities of slight importance it encountered tho Liberal Arts building but slight ly checked in speed. Mr. Douglass was tired of his ride, and from tho bear's . growling con cluded that his fellow passenger was also ready to stop. "I wish, said Mr. Douglass, never relaxing his backward walk, "that 1 had omitted this lastvisifto tho fair. It is rather exciting, but too weari some after my long weeks of tramp ing. I am glad to see the Building of Manufactures ahead. Tho wheel may get through it, though I couldn't. But it won't go much farther." But he was wrong. Tho lath and plaster offered little resistance to the iron wueel, and the little elevator boy in the center of tho building opened all the throttles, shot bodily out through tho roof, olovator and all, and landed in the Vikipg ship, much put out, but littlo hurt. On its way down the center aisle tho wheel picked up tho big tele scope, and on its next revolution flung that marvelous instrument high in tho air. But Ben Franklin, was waiting for just such a chanco, and ho promptly accepted it. Chuck ing asido his key and kitelino, he stopped lightly out from tho portico of the Electricity building and caught the telescope on tho fly (for which feat ho afterward received a vote of thanlis from the University of Chicago), placed it carefully on the wooded island and modestly re sumed his place on tho pedestal, say Ing Bimply, "A penny saved is two pence clear." Cutting a clear channel through the biggest building, tho wheel leaped the basin a sight that bo as tonished Miss Progress that fahe tailed to tho Sciences and Arts to save themselves, camo down from her perch, fled shrieking into Ma chinery hall and took tho crane for t.io other end. Miss Republic noticed the passing wheel, but until it was gone did not understand what was going on. Tho wheol was now headed for Agricultural hall, b'ut as it came within a threatening distanco three young womeu of tho Zodiac family, with a single impulse, throw their globe at tho wheel, at tho same timo uttering three bhrioks that did more execution than the ball they had thrown. Tho ball chattered ouo of the towora on tho convent, but tho thrieks saved tho Agricultuial build ing, with all its priceless conieobR preserved prunes and patent liirvebt ors. Beared from its course, the wheol sought un avuuuo of escape. To Mr. Dou-jlass' horror and tho bear's to prot, tfl course lay toward tho mov ing Bidowalk. Striking the wrong (tho incoming) side, tbo" wheol began to Bee that it had made a tnistake, for gradually it was compelled to slow up. Mr. Douglass and tho performing bear seized tho opportunity to take a short rest. Both wore experienced travelers and never failed to tako ad vantage of any chanco to relievo tho monotony of a journey. Meanwhile an alarm had been sounded upon all the trumpets held by figures upon tho Administration building; telephones wero at work calling aid; tho Fire Queen and all tho patrol wagons wero dashing to and fro; tho Krupp gun was trained upon tho wheel, and all was bustle and excitement. Buffalo Bill, Texas Jack and Pro fessor Hagenbeck, with high boots on, came riding like mad across tho Court of Honor and charged bravely down upon tho motionless wheol. When within range, Mr. Cody opened firoand succeeded in breaking all tho windows that still remained intact in any of tho wheal cars. Texas Jack lassoed tho bear and dragged tho grateful littlo beast from tho top of tho wheel, whereupon tho professor consoled the littlo animal by giving him tho usual lump of sugar taken from the professor's coattail pocket. Just at this moment engines "990," "John Bull" and "De Witt Clinton" ai'rived for tho purpose of hauling tho wheel back to its place. They were just too lato. Tho wheel, having lost headway and remained still for a short timo, now began to bo carried back along tho sidewalk. It rounded tho curve, ran along to tho pier at tho end, and oncoming back had acquired a speed tjiat sent it off upon a new expedi tion. This timo tho statuo of the Repub lic realized there was something ir regular in tho action of tho wheel and aroused from her lethargy enough to step languidly ashore and let tho wheel go by. The Krupp gun was discharged, but the missile, miss ing tho wheel, put an end to the battleship Illinois, which went into plaster chips with her flag still fly ing. Mr. Douglass said pettishly, "I am getting very much bored at having to run about on this axle, and I do think tho authorities of the fair ought to do something to "protect a visitor from such an accident." But his conscience told him he had done wrong in entering the wheel without having secured permission. As the great unicycle ran for the Transportation building the statue of "Land" romarked, "For tho land's sake 1" and hastily put on brakes, a course for which he wag commended by Messrs. Fulton and Watt, his neighbors. Stephenson, however, blamed him for not first securing one of tho airbrakes, of which there were plenty inside the building. Striking the Intramural line, tho wheel ran over Festival hall, explod ing tho bellows of the great organ, and then ran triumphantly up and bursted the Horticultural bubble of glass. Just here, however, the wheol and Mr. Douglass caught sight of the dome of the Illinois state building, and tho iron creature turned asido with a sigh that could bo plainly heard at the British building on the lake shore and then ran down tho Midway like a hunted stag. Hero Professor Hagonbeck and his young men received the wheel with stern glances that even that awful monster of iron and glass found ir resistible. With a few lashes of his long whip, tho professor soon ro ducod thp wheol to submission, and lit the word of command it ran to its place, climbed into position and was still. Tho professor immediately gavo the wheel a lump of sugar from his coattail pockot, potted it upon the cogs, and saying "There will be no further trouble, I think," walked serenely back to lunch. Ho had forgotten Mr. Douglass. How was tho poor tutor to reach tho ground? Ho tried to climb down one of tho spokes, but slipped, lost his hold and was falling, falling, fall "I really believe, boys," said Mr. Douglass, "that I've been asleep. I'vo had a remarkable dream.
