It te probably jilniiat uele to ex
pect intelligence mad enthusiasm on
the 8hjtfCfc of better road. In Ibla
in of crank and oppos-Ulon, no mat
tr whit will be nroDOsed. if it U
fin'!loanlty and lotellectclence
and meco to defeated. The worthiest
vagaries of one man lifce Peunoyer at
tract more admiration and gain more
applause tban the most salutary and
philosophic proposition that can be
framed. We nej.l roiJi; the people
seed etsplynient; yet we dare say the
BBorebuiluewllke, the mora practical
tbe plans to eecuro tnew ends, the lers
approbation tbey are likely to tnett
wftb.
The road convention to be held at
Sales, Jan. 13tb is by far the most im
portant gathering that will probaby
be held la Marlon county tbls year.
There are many proposed plans by
which to secure the funds to build
roads. There is not much room for
difference of opinion among scientific
sen as to how a road shall be built,
girea the line of road and material to
boused. How it shall be paid for if
quite another matter. Whether by
taxes, by subscription by the abutllug
property, by the city, county or state,
r by issuing bonds, or by a combina
tion of several or all ot these plans,
roads mutt be had. Whatever will
bring relief from the present system,
and Is practical will be welcomed by
sraeUealmen.
Work to make better roads mnst pro
ceed from the intelligence and public
spirit of the level-headed citizens who
haye no axes to grind and.no bobble-,
to ride, but that of good roads, and
bow to get them. When Engllsbmeu
settle a new couutry, the first tblog
tbey do is to build good roads. It is
the last thing Americans do. Wheth
er we have reached the proper age aud
remoteueaaa from the flrst settlement
ef this country, remains to be seen. Ii
to hoped we have.
A WRO.SQ VIEW TO TAKE.
A road convention Is to bo held at
Salem January 13th. While every In
dividual, of all age and position In life,
is ready to ofler a klulc on guueral prlu
clples at the condition of roads we will
wager, lhat the convention Is ouly at
tended by a very few of tuoao Inter
ested. A disposition to kick Is always
with us but a disposition to act Is for
eign, to too tuaiiy of us. Mt-dfurd Mull.
Tbls Is a wrong view to tuke. It Is
believed the people of Murlon county
are prepared to start a moye fur u betlt-i
system and better rouds will result.
The time lias come when people muni
act, because the value of products will
depend more on means of access to
Market than upon auythlug else.

A Queer Indian Ilelle.
There was recently found In an an
cient oyeter bank on the Sabine river,
just below this point, a well preserved
Indian idol. Tho image was nearly four
feet high aud was of n threo hended
man, with tho scales of a turtlo cover
ing tho entire body, but with tho feet
and claws of n panther. Tho idol ie
hollow and contalnid tho skeleton of a
young child, in an upright position, the
hcud fitting into that of the god.
Whether tho child was thus sacrificed
to tho god or tho imago merely nsed as
n repository of the dead body cannot
bo decided. Tho carving on the Idol
showed a degree of skill uncommon
among tho Indians as existing now 01
as found hero by tlio early settlers, and
as tho banks of this vicinity were cvi
dently erected by people antedating
llieso it Is probable that tho Imago was
of their religion also. It is of stone
nnd is composed of four or five pieces
neatly cemented together with a sub
stanco not recognized by any ma? on who
has seen it.
The union of the several stones cm
ployed in it is so cunningly dono that
only n close examination reveals i. ai
all. Tho eyes nroof ngato ami cutitb

WiUr Jet PnpoJjio For Ship.
Vy-ater jet propulsion for ships seems
bare a peculiar fascination for a great
many inrentors. Year after year its
supposed merits baTe been dinned into
the ears of people liEeiy to interest uexa
seives in it financially, and in a number
of cases actual trials have been made
with a view of practically demonstrat
ing that the advantages claimed for it
really exist. None of these experiments
has ever given the slightest encourage
ment to the scheme. Still, like Ban
qno's ghost, it will not down, and at
(resent it is again being vigorously ad
vertised. Its promises, of course, are of
an alluring kind.
In case of complicated engines to drive
screw propellers or paddle wheels we
have simply, so the promoters tell ns, to
provide a few pumps, a boiler or perhaps
several boilers, to snpply tho steam nec
essary to work them, and a nozzle in the
, ltern of the vesseL
The pumps will take
in water through orifices in the bow or
at the sides of the ship, drive it out at
high pressure through the nozzle at the
stern, and reaction will do tho rest, pro
pelling the boat forward at variously
stated speeds.
Tbe cost of the whole outfit, it is ar
gued, will bo comparatively low, the
space occupied also will be small, and
the expense of maintenance of the ma
chinery will bo materially reducod as
compared with that of the currently
used installations aboard ship. The
drawback to the whole thing, however,
is that the sytem will not work, or rath
er that it will not work in a commer
cially satisfactory way. Cassier's Maga
zine. Care of tne loutnc.
The laws of New York and Massa
chusetts have placed those states in the
foremost rank of intelligent and liberal
care for the insane. The enactments
regulating the commitment to asylums,
and the caro while there, of the insane,
and especially tho state care act of New
York, have been in the main wise and
beneficent.
The weak point in the New York law
is that a plan for centralizing in a state
commission power as to details of man
agement of the hospitals, which was
overwhelmingly defeated in tho Massa
chusetts legislature, has become port of
tbe New York statute, and that the
lunacy commission, which ougbt to be
a purely supervising nnd advisory
board, has executive functions which
are not only needlessly vexatious to tbe
hospital managers and medical officers
and prejudicial to the interests of their
patients, but also may be destructive of
good morals. Tbe managers and med
ical officers of the hospitals for the in
sano have taken courage from tbe polit
ical upheaval in their state and are at
tempting n reform, in which wo wish
them every success. Boston Medical
and Surgical Journal.

An innovation in mining work is an
invention for tamping and ramming
boreholes. Tho hole itself is made of
a smaller diameter at the inner end
whoro the cartridgois placed. A small
wood disk rests against the shoulder
mado by the smaller holo and protects
tho cartridge. The tamping consists of
blocKS of compressed clay, which are
broken up in tho bolo by the rammer.
Tho disk, blocks and rummer head are
all perforated so that they can bo thread
ed on to tho fuse wires. Clay blocks
aro mado at a very cheap rate by a sim
ple, machine, and by their use uniform
ity in tho tamping material is secured.
