Fight 011 a Locomotive. Incompatibility of temper between an engino driver and a stoker very uearly brought about a disastrous railvray acci dent. The two men had not been for some time on very good terms, and a violent quarrel broke out as they were conducting a train over a rather difficult lino. High words were exchanged and then they cutno to blows, and a regular setto ensued in spite of the confined space which thoy had for this test of their pro ficiency in the noble art. For some time the battle raged, while the train abandoned to its own re lources sped onward with such velocity that the passengers, ignorant of tho cause of its sudden elevation to the dignity of on express, began to entertain serious misgivings, while tho country people, looking up from their labor in tho fields and taking in the real situation at a glance, viewed its wild career with feel ings akin to consternation. The train was rapidly approaching a station at which another one would soon be due, and unless its progress were promptly checked n terrible collision was a moral certainty. Happily, just at the critical moment tho engino driver and the stoker be thought therfisolves of tho fearful catas trophe that was impending nnd, conclud ing a truce, they set to work with tho utmost energy to arrest the lightning speed of the train. They were just in time, for in another moment they would have dashed headlong into tho othor train. The company, of courso, got wind of tho affair, and an investigation has been set on foot without delay. Paris Correspondent. Must u Mall Carrier Doff Ills Hat? An interesting and novel point was raised in a peculiar manner in Kansas City recently. The question arising was, Is u United States postman in contempt of court when ho refuses to tako his hat off in a stato court? The mail carrier ontored tho courtroom with his mail pouch slung over his shoulder and some letters in his hand. Ho advanced across, the room and laid tbem on tho clerk's desk. Tho doputy sheriff rapped for order. Tho mail carrier walked toward the door and still kept on his hat. The deputy met him aud told him to take his hat off; that ho was in contempt of court Tho man of letters replied that his cap was a part of tho uniform which the federal government required him to wear whiloondutyj that ho was there on duty, and there was no law to make him take it off. The deputy warned him that he could not enter tho courtroom again with his hat on, and tho matter was reported to tho authorities In the federal build ing.
