Wignn wns of opinion thnt nosinglo tiorson una tho two brains oxnetly bnl ancod. Ho considered tho mostpowor ful mind was thnt in which tho two brains, both being henlthy(wcro nenr est to oach other in enpneity. But ho belioTod that Uint was also n good condition in which ono brain, took tho leading part, and in which tho other brain, in accord with tho stronger, lonttho stronger its nssistanco. A mind sustained in this manner was strong forenduranco and ono that wns ablo to undertake, with certainty of successful work, tho most difficult and hazardous labors. Tho minds of men liko Cromwell, Washington, Wellington, Franklin, would be- of this lost named cast, while tho minds of tho giants of intellect, of Napoleon, Newton, Columbus, would bo con structed on two trains of equal pow er, both in unison in their capacity and will for action. In common life tho two brains act together with sufficient unity to maintain the mind in a fairly bal anced state, but thoro are conditions in which the divergenco is so consid erable tbat balanco is broken, and then there is what we call insanity. Wigan sums up tho argument in a very clear manner. He says: "I think it may bo assumed without risk of contradiction that tho fact of each brain being perfect and a com plete instrument of thought is abun dantly proved. That each, while in health, corresponds in action ;with its fellow is obviou$ from tho fact that this unison and correspondence givo only ono result, as in the caso of two eyes producing single vision; mar, wnen irom any cause one brain is disordered a discrepancy in the "two processes of thinking takes place; that tho healthy brain (aid ed by the Rction of such of the drgans of its follow as are not affected by thO disorder -which disturbs the oth ers) can in nearly 999 cases in 1,000, according to tho usual proportion in this 'country, control all manifesta tions of morbid emotion or judg ment, but that the thousandth caso is tho madman." Tho balance fa sufficiently pro served on tho grand scale-to prevent the intrusion into tho world of an excess of insanity. At the same time there is a wido rango of diversion, short of obvious destruction of bal ance. Heredity hero plays a leading part. Dr. Richardson in Asclepiad. Holes In the DrluMng Cups. Every tin cup in tho police stations of this city now has a hole punched in its "bottom. Tho police commis sioners wondered at tho disappear ance of so many cups somo; timo ago and caused an investigation to be made. This showed that the police men were in tho habit or carrying cups of water to their sleeping" rooms to quench their thirst during tho night. In this way tho cups were mislaid and novor returned to their proper places. Many remedies wore suggested, but without avail. Tito cups were tied by chains and strings, but they continued to disappear. At last an ingenious member of the de partment suggested punching a holp in tho bottom of every cup. Then it would be impossible for them to hold water any length of time. Tho in ventor did not secure a patent, and in all the station houses his plan has been adopted. Now York Times. How Westerners Retard the East. Ono very noticeable peculiarity of tho people of Colorado is their habit of speaking of tho east as "homo." "At homo in tho east wo call that Virginia creeper," Baid oho. "I go homo to hovr Vork very few months, " said another. "Wo long to go back east to Our homes, but when wo get thoro tho climate does not agree with us, and wo hurry back to Colorado." Thus was revealed the peculiar tenure tho place-has upon thousands of its citizens. Juhan Ralph in Harper's. The Heavens Seen From tlis Sea. Every one who has been much at sea knows something of tho peculiar splendor of the heavens when beheld from tho dock of a ship. Celestial phenomena seem to possess an 'un usual impressivenesa when viewed under such circumstances. Tho clear ness of the ah in. fair weather and" the flatness and distance of the hori zon tend to heighten this effect A similar impression is noticed upon th broad, 'guy plains of Toxaa, Kvmxm mi iimniidw t r niiri iM ni9in i - 6CONCl ICHlf SHOOTlfiO. Tomorrow morning you will go with a gang to the second embankment, about two miles from here, and you'll havo to get up earlier than 5 o'clock." "All right, sir.'' "And I think you'd better turn in now, so as to get enough leept" "I will, sir." "By tho way, your gun's in tho corner.' . Tho convict paid no attention. Throe times did Old Ambrose cry halt and then fired. The convict fell. 'You got him," said the construc tion boss, coming forward "Yes, and I know ho s done for. I was going to shoot him in tho leg, but just as I pulled tho trigger he stepped in a low place. I'm going over to beo tho poor fellow." Tho construction boss wont with him.
