pie Of th human heart, than thai of
patriotism
It to th Very life and mother of lib
ertyt for without It. freedom ami wf
sonal rltflita would never have been
born.
Love of one's fleurilry and a loyal
devotion to Its interest, carries with It
an equal devotion to the welfare of
humanity, and the same willing desire
to save his fellow men,
While all war Is denounced by the
seniitteutallstasbarbarousaBd wlokcd;
the statesman and the philosopher well
understands it is only the necessity
of war that should bo condomned.
When that unavoidable necessity has
arisen In every age and In every land,
the gallant soldier who has attested
bis patriotism with his life, has rightly
Leon crowned with laurels ana an
apotheosis of glory and honor.
There la a strange and subtle power
In the willing sacrifice of the man who
dies for his country, or bis fellow men.
We lustly honor and venerate bis
memory, which we express In marble
shafts or sculptured monuments, or In
'..' . - a 1...1 ,.i i,i.
me sweet periume mure iym;ui m u
grateful deeds of fresh and beautiful
flowers upon bis grave.
Not to do so would be as ungrateful
arid discreditable to those he tewed, as
his sacrificial qflerlug was honorable to
himself.
Nothing can warm the natural affec
tions and touch the human heart as to
know and say, as yoil kneel at anothers
grave, "this man died formy country
and. for me."
And I envy not that people or that
man, whose heart responds to no such
emotions of gratitude.
How sad, yet true tbo terrible fact,
that the country's sin of legalizing the
crime of slavery for 240 years, fell at
last upon our noble soldiery, for they
bore the nation's sin, and.tbousands
died for tbo nation's crime.
'And this, American citizens, Ib the
philosophy and the reason why we
honor, and should forever honor and
revere the memories of our country's
brave defenders and saviors, whether
Hying or dead,
JNot that any died for their country's
wroag, for in that there was neither
virtue nor benefit, but because they
loved their country unto death, and
tried to save It, notwithstanding its
wicked wrong of legalizing oppression.
IFor this worthy and noble end, let
notithls Memorial Day pass unobserved
until the aunlvt-rsary and day of our
national birth shall have been forgotten
forever.
But while wo are offering the sweet
Incense of fiowers to the memory of our
fallen patriot soldiery, aud upon their
graves, we should never forget their
equally patriotic, and perhaps moro ef
flulentibutfiurvlying comrades.
'They are, and of right ought to be,
tae.Natlon'a most honored wards.
(Wards, did I aay? I had far better
say, the Nation's most honored guests.
F,
Kor as the brave and gallant Logan has
aptly said, "Tuq pension list of our
orave soiaiers is a rou or nonor."
It should not extend, however, to
that inconsiderate degree, which tran-
HOeuds the bounds ot a irencrous and
grateful recognition of honest services,
nor which prostitutes to mercenary
greea tue generous ottering or a re
deemed nation's gratitude.
But it m a thousand times better to
err on the sldo of a grateful generosity
than upon the side of t. parsimonious
iBgratltude.
1 We, can honor the brave Confederate
soldier, who honently fought far his
people aud country with patriotic zeal,
for they are now truo aud devoted Am
erican citizens. Out we regard with
loathing aud contempt, the mercenary
Hessian, or the political or ecclesiasti
cal Toroy, whoso heart can only vomit
forth abuse of those uoblo patriots, who
though sometimes vauqulthed In battle
wero always victorious In war.
ilut tbo unpatriotic citizen will
say; "Why should the nation contin
ue Its substantial aid cither to the sol
dier or his widow ? or why longer
make Its usual ofTerlug of flowers, or of
memorial service to the memory of the
long departed dead ?" I reply, that
the reasons for their continuance are
beyond all computation or estimate,
wl!eaculd Indifference and a heart
less selfishness are the only reasons for
their dls continuance.
ImlKhtaaviu the first nlaoe. that
this Memorial day, In Its edueatlonal
and patriotic effects upon the 'people,
la a mighty power lu creating a bulwark
of ever ready defense, far less burden
some yet. more Impregnable than forts
and batteries, or the staudlng armies of
uespotlani,
Rut there Is another reason that Is
ooaelualv and overwhelming.
It Is because the nation's obligations
oanusver end except with Its existence
aud Its life.
