Thrf Tyroleso girls, it is reportod, aro "very picturesque," and with the Hun garian contingent sailed a complete or chestra of musicians. Tho agents em ployed in getting togother this company of fair women have interviewed, it is said, no fewer than 1,600 persons who nppliod in answer to tho various adver tisements. This is truly tho largest of largo or ders in tho way of a living ethnological exhibition, and the very magnitude of tho enterprise cunnot fail to suggest tho difficulties with which tho promoters of this astonishing- show of fair women have had to contend. In somo cases, perhaps, tho dispatch of this cargo of femininity to Now York on route to Chi cago may be instanced a3 closely ap proaching tho sending of cools to New castle. Chicago is within direct and reasonably rapid railway communication with Moxico, and it would bo easy enough to procure tho consignment to the shores of Lake Michigan of any num ber of dark eyed senoritas in "ribosos'' from Tenochtitlan, to say nothing of stunted little Indian squaws.with ropy black hair and complexions approximat ing in huo to that of a hot roast turkoy. Then again tho Pearl of tho Antilles is only some three days' steaming from New York, and Cuban belles in very large straw hats and black laco scarfs riding in the Havana volante, drawn by a weedy horse, with a negro postilion with silver earrings, white calico breeches and bare legs, with feet girt with silver spurs, and thereby present ing a colorable imitation of jackboots, would form a desirable addition to the attractions of tho World's fair. San Francisco, moreover, which is only four days distant by rail from Chicago, would furnish an adequate supply of celestial ladies with "golden.lilics," or small feet. It is even questionable whether there was any appreciable need to send out a convoy of French young ladies to appear in ''true Parisian stylo" at Chicago. Tho true Parisian stylo has long sinco been acclimatized on tho other side of the Atlantic, and we should say that a far larger number of fascinating cos tumes from the ateliers of Worth, Felix and their competitors are purchased by American ladies during their visits to Europe than are bought by English cus tomers. Paris in tho halcyon days of tho second empire was denned as the placo where good Americans went to when they died, but our transatlantic kinsmen have not ceased to flock to the gay city since France has been under the sway of the third republic, and foshlonablo fe male society in tho great cities of the States is certainly as radiantly attired as aro any of the dames in the equipages which embellish the Bois de Boulogne in fino weather or who are to bo mot with at official receptions and diplomatic soi rees. To a great extent likewise the Pa risian fashions aro Bet by tho leading act resses on tho French stage, and lime. What Effect Will tho l'alr HurcT The question was asked tho Listener recently, "What great effect do you sup pose this Chicago exhibition will have upon tho people of America comparable with the effect which the contennial ex hibition had?" The question was a hard one to answer. Wo never know before hand what revolutions wo aro going to have. Tho American people thought in 1870 that they knew everything that there was to know, but when they got to Philadelphia they found that they did not. Thoy were profoundly affected in spito of themselves and their presump tuous confidence in their own perfections and omniscience. But tho influence then came from abroad. From what wo are already able to learn of tho foreign ex hibit atChicago, it does not appear like ly that wo shall bo profoundly influenced by it But perhaps we shall be. It seems, howqver, that tho influenco is more likely to be exerted this time by our own best minds, in the various forms pf art and in tho application of art to in dustry, upon the minds of our less re fined people, upon our great philistino "middle class" people. To judge from thearchitecture and landscape garden ing, of, the exhibition, eur commercial daises are likely to see a great light Boston Transcript; Mr. Keksn'a Lack of Humor, Mr. Rehm announces in the papers that if his wife, who disappeared last wekdoe not return within three days ho will "forfeit all claims to her." Candaco Wheeler im Harper's. rurlfylng Water Cor m Dutch City. The water supply of tho Dutch city bearing tho plcturesquo name of Lee wardon is taken from a small lake of brackish and somowhat yellow water near tho place. To purify it for domes tic purposes it is rcrated, filtered nnd allowed to settle quietly in largo tanks. Thotoration is accomplished by allow ing tho water to fall down a series of steps, and in its fall an additional ele ment of purification is introduced in thq form of a solution of alum, which ia forced into the water by pumps, oper ating at tho same rate as tho main pump ing engines, so that tho amount of solu tion will always bear a fixed ratio tq tho amount of water. From theso steps, tho water passes to a set of fonr-ottling basins holding about 1,000,000 gallons in all, where all tho coarsor impurities aro allowed to settle to tho bottom. From these basins the water flows tq three filter beds, each having an area of about C,800 square feet and consisting of a top layer of fine sand from the dunes, underlaid by coarse river sand, sea shells, fine gravel and coarso gravel. The rate of filtration is about 2T inchoa an hour and is controlled by a series of automatic valves so arranged that when the effluent falls in quantity below its usual amount the depth of water over tho beds is increased, thereby making the pressure which forces the water through the filtering material, and thus, increasing tho yield. ,From tho filtering beds the water, clear and wholesome aft er this treatment, is pumped into the mains leading to tho city. St. Louis Globe-Democrat. Unanswerable Proof. Some years since I was one of a rather hilarious party driving throngh tho Adi rondack woods. In a lucid, serious mo ment one of the party; asked, the namo of a low growth shrub along the roadside. "It's a sycamore," somo ono responded. ''The people in this region call it a syca-i more, and they know." A sharp discus sion followed, and a naturalist would have writhed to hear the heterodox classic fications, the first speaker persisting "it is a sycamoro." "But Scripture's against that theory,'' said a theological student finally, and we clamored for the counter evidence. "Zaccheus resorted to a sycamore tree to seo his Lord, and the injunction was, 'Zaccheus, come down!' Now, if tho sycamore were that contemptible height, the command would have been, Zact cheus, got up 1" Cor. Harper's Bazar. Accomplishments of Japanese) Daughters.
