disreputable looking was an old man

a very "bod'" look. Ho was gam
bling stupidly and losing fast This
was Captain Swan, tho postmaster,
A fow hours later tho inspector
called at tho postofflco, which occu
pied tho poorest framo building in
tho town. Captain Swan sat on a
packing box near tho front door,
lookiug out at tho beauties of nature,
while a clerk was tying up tho lot
tors for him. On hearing his visit
or'B errand tho postmustor said:
"So you are a postofflco inspoo
tor. Well, you'll find thoro ain't
uothin wrong with this oflleo not
Hinco I had it. Can't say much for
it before that"
Tho inspector hinted that hlsoo
rouuts wore a littlo ovorduo, and
Swan replied :
"Yes. that's right Say, Jimmy,
how about them monoy ordor bills?
They beon paid yot?"
"Oh, uo, captain," said tho clork,
"You romombor I'vo beon trying a
long time to got you to fix them up."
"Yob. that's so, Jimmy." Then he
addod, turning to tho inspector,
"You boo, I'vo beon bo busy."
Tho postmaster assented to tho in
spector's proposition to look.ovor tbe
books. Thoy nmountod to nothing

contained a fow entries of stamps,
whisky accounts, paid and unpaid,
monoy paid on a bouso that Swan
was building and various other pri
vate memorandums. It took n wook
to approximate affairs and to find out
