In several states district prosecu
ting attorneys havo been supplanted
tiy county prosecuting attorneys,
rills Is done whero tbo work of pub
lic prosecutors bus grown to such an
extent that tlio services of such au
nlllulal are almost constantly re
quired lu euch county of a judicial
district. Tho public prosecutor for
the county u'.so becomes legal adviser
lu all matters where the county re
quires suoli service.
Mr. Ford bus Introduced a bill for
couuty attorneys, which, If it Is ac
ceptable to thd counties of this judi
cial district, will abolish the present
ofilce of district prosecutor and give
euch county an attorney. Most of
the counties now pay out from one
to two thousand dollars a year for
prosecutiug attorney services. Un
der this bill tbey would not pay so
much und perhaps get a cheaper
grade of service, ua tbo attorneys
who will give all their time for from
tCOO to i000 a year would not rauk
iu ability with tho present public
prosecutors.
HEQUlllE KAILI10AD3 TO FENCE.
A petition has bean laid before
tho legislature asking for the pas
sage of a law requiring railroads to
maintain their owu fences through
farming aud pusture lands. It Is
signed by all tlio farmers along the
railroads In this county.
The railroads do not stop for stock.
They run tbelr twins night aud day
and wheti thoy kill an animal thoy
keop the owuor out of tho money
quitoa long tlmo and always out bin
bill down to the lowest limit.
The bill asks that the railroads be
required to fence their traoks where
tbey pass through agricultural lands
tint aro Improved und occupied. Th
not this a reasonable request?
8 muld it not be tho law of the
state? Wo beliovo tho farmers
should have this protection.
WHO FUR BKNATUR.
!
Tho death of Justice Lamar may
result in promotion of Dulph aud
election of u now senator. From
Portland would come M. O. George
and riol. Hlrsch. Roseburg would
send Dinger Hermann. Astoria
would present C. W. Fulton. Suloai
has a man who once came nearer
getting thoro than any ol th tee
named for senatorial honors, Gov.
Moody.
It Is not probable IhatCongreHsman
Hermann, who has had tho check to
put himself lu the race of his own
accord, would find so many friends
umong tho awemblymuii as ho Im
agines. His performance for Her

of tho rest of tho state, smells to
heaven. He would get votes lu pro
