prepared. Observing tho great mag
nitude of the withdrawal, and real
izing Its possible effect upon Itlie
mining opportunities of portions of
the regions reserved, unless th pro
clamation could bo modified as oc
casion might require, ho suggested
that, except as to Mount Hood and
Crater luko surroundings, further
action bo suspended until the Ore
gon legislature, now in setsiuu,
could bo aflorded au opportunity of
expressing its wishes, so that the
character of tho proclamation might
bo Inquired Into. The matterwas
Bubmltttd to the attorney-general,
and he decided that utuny time,
upon satisfactory bhowlng, the pres
ident can modify or entirely revoke
his proclamation without legislative
recourse.

trlul of Hugh Dempsey for complic
ity in the Homesteud poisoning.

Homestead and their physicians.
The latter all express the belief that
tho men had been poisoned. The
defense objected to the physicians'
testimony. The court said the pro
ceedings were somewhat Irregular,
but if it could be proved the defend
ant was guilty of furnishing the
pohon, the evidence would be nd
misslble. The district attorney
would show this fact and the testi
mony was admitted.
