Tonight the great Columbian food
exposition, under the auspices of the
Food Manufacturers of America, will
be formally opened by Govenor
Flower in the presence of fully twen
ty thousand people. The exposition
embraces everything fed to the hu
man stomach, alcohol and medicines
barred. The electric effects are su
perb. Ail the arches are outlined
with colored electric lights, and in
oe of the booths five hudred elec
tric globes change into every imag
inable form moment to moment.
Among tho exhibitors is Vice
President Morton, ten of whose
prize Uuernsoy cattlo are on view in
the basement where the agricultural
part of the great show is in progress.
Tho music druing the continuance
of the exposition will be by 'the great
ifeldl orchestra. Between times

It Is a veritable carnival of grub, for
mnny of the two hundred exhibitors

The Train Robbers Seen.
Stockton, Cal., Oct. 1. W. D.
Wright, of Toulumne, was In town
and claimed to have seen Evsub
und Bontag on Thursday. Wright
claims to be a ruueher on the road
between Toulumne City and Gray
son. He suys: "Evans and Sontag
came to my house yesterday morn
ing about 10 o'clock. They were
ou horseback, and came from the
south. The auimals seemed blown,
and had evidently had hard work.
Evans approached me and asked If
I could give them something to eat.
Ho wore two revolvers in bis belt,
4ud had a pack slung over his back.
Sontag was' similarly accoutered,
and had a cloth-covered canteen of
water besides. In reply to their re
quest for food, I invited them into
tho house and had my wife cook
some breakfast. Before eating,
Sontag took the horses iuto the burn
and fed them. From their conver
sation it seemed that they aro mak
ing for some pass lu the Coast range
and from there will go to San Fran
cisco and leave the country by boat.
The men made a hearty meal, and
then asked for a bed. Evans kept
wutch while Sontag slept, and
vice versa. They remained at- my
place for over two hours and seemed
as unconcerned as possible, though
always on the. alert and watchful
forauutack. When they left the
nouse tuey lorcea me to take my
wife and children to a room in the
second story which has no window
snd lock them In. Then 1 was
made to accompany them some
few miles along the road to the
.Northwest. About three miles
from my house they took mo into a
field und tied me to a tree, saying:
'We are sorry to do tills, but doubt
less you will be found in a few
hours.! With that they left me
and rode off. Evans had his left
arm bound up with strips of his
shirt at a point just below tho shoul
der He had seemingly been wound
ed in the last meeting at the cabin.
It must liavo been another two
hours before I could get loose, and
I came nt onco to Stockton to notify
Sheriff Cunningham."
Suicide at Jacksonville.
Jacksonville, Or., Oct. 1. S.E.
Day, 18-year-old son of ex-County
Judge Silus J. Day, of Jacksonville,
committed suiaido yesterday by
blowing the top of his head off with
an old musket, at Jacksonville.
The boy had been attending school,
and yesterday played truant and
went to Central Point fair. His
father hud promised to allow him to
attend the fair today with the
family, but learning of his running
away yesterday thought to punish
him by compelling him to stay at
home. Tho boy then wanted to go
hunting, but his mother forbade,
and gave him work to do at homo.
Soon the boy was missed, and seared
revealed him at the barn, near the
house, dead, ho having taken an
old-fashioued musket, placed tho
muzzel near his head and discharg
ed tho weupon with his foot, liter
ally blowing his head off.
