THE BLACK BOX.
Tr. vratt in Hie tlenth of a dark and
dreary winter. But it was in the
middle of a warm and ueantitui
Bummor when llio deed was dono.
As yet I am not alluding to any
thing mysterious at all, but at tho
auno timo 1 am very anxious to
A-mlnin how it was that I. a htunhlo
and not altogether Holitnry English
man, found myself located in tno
Hotel Drei Liobchcn at Annanas-
berg.
I was traveling alono ono summer
timo, full of health and uncommonly
full of spirits, and I rashly got out of
tho Rhino steamer at Annanasberg
in order to pay n. flying visit to a
miniature Paris, hedged 'round with
nvnntios and consecrated to tho mili
tary, and doliver some letters of in
traduction to an cntnusiasuc iiingusn
ongincer, who was doing his best to
mako tho stolid Gennanu rnergetie,
and mako a fortune during tho un
enviable process.
Stmnrro to sav. ho took to mo.
There was no beating nbout tho
bush. Wo woro menus at onco, nnu
a few hours after my credentials
wero read and thrown asUo, I found
mybclf walking with my rrm in hii
toward that cozy and hospitable
mansion in which lie lived, and
whero ho had inti-oduccd that de
lightful homo feeling, and those
pleasant family associatidas, so dear
to tho English so Btrange to the
foroign mind.
Hero was a minlaturo English
homo planted in a strango land, and
I can toll you it was by no means ob
jcctionablo to enjoy my cut of joint
under his mahogany in tho company
of men worth talking to and wonion
decidedly worth admiring.
I am now gradually nearing tho
point. Before tho next huh sank my
portmanteau was moved from the
hotel to my friend's house, and tho
first night I Blopt under his hospi
tablo roof I was dreaming, strango
to say, of his daughter.
Thero was no help for it. It was
tho very place of all others to mako
lovo in. It was tho very weather of
all weather for tho operation.
A house surrounded by a wilder
ness of varied trees overarching one
another, and making lovo in their
quaint and fanciful fashion; alako
at tho end of tho garden full of deso
late weeds, and owning a crazy old
boat; a soft croquet lawn for tho
moro worldly, and bright llowors for
tho lovers of nature; a sun which
porpotually gleamed upon the warm,
white house, and laughter forever
ringing out of it surely such a
placo as this was tho one of all others
to mako lovo in.
They called her Annabel, and 1
called her so first on the brightest of
all tho moonlight nights, when half
a dozen of us had beon frightening
the girls in tho shrubbeiy, and wo
found ourselves alone I deny that
it was accident by tho gloomy lake.
There wo were. Tho ono word
Annabel camo trembling from my
lips, and tho ono look which her an
swering eyes gave mo peibuadod mo
that I had not mado a mistake.
Wo wero engaged, and a fow days
after I left for England with all tho
parental difficulties got over the
husband that was to bo of nstru
and sonsiblo and as pure a woiuan
" as over fell to a young fellow's lot.
This was in tho sumraor time, and
at midwinter I found mybclf, of
course, at tho Droi Liobchon at An
anuasborg. It was a bitterly cold winter, but I
heeded it not. Tho thoughts of see
ing her again almost warmed mo.
My oxcitomont to got away from
London was tremendous. I was
bound for Germany and my lovo.
My holiday was short, but undor tho
ciraunstances whero in tho wholo
world could it bo bettor spontf
And what with sleeping and smok
ing und dreaming and thinking and
fidgeting and louging, I arrived
after midnight at tho Droi liobchon.
It was too late to present mysolf
nt tho white houBo. Besides, I was
not prosontablo. I was dirty, un
ahavon and woobegono from con
stant traveling. A quiot night at
tho hotel I thought tho best plan,
Uiat I might present mysolf Bpick
and Bpnn tho next morning.
Such precautious as thoso should
novor bo forgotten. Tho fomalo
mind is generous but Buscoptiblo,
and this susceptibility not unfro
quontly conquors generosity. I do
torminod to bo on tho right Bldo of
tho lietlge.'autl" made up Tny mind
for a refreshing sleep at mo .urn
Liobchbn.
But I reckoned without my host,
It was after midnight when I
drove tip to tho hotel from tho Bta
tion, and though, as luck would have
it, mino host had not retired for the
night, I found anything but pleasant
news awaiting mo. I was absolutely
thunderstruck. There was no room
in tho hotel.
"What! at this timo of tho ycarf"
I asked, with something liko irrita
tion. A stupid and very positive "ja"
answered mo incontestably.
"But liavo you no corner in which
you can squeezo mo for tho night?" I
asked.
Tho landlord consulted his slate.
Ho also consulted a very sleepy and
obstinate servant tho kind of man
who seemed determined not to smilo
or bo genial, and appeared to tako a
quiot and fiendish delight in my
misery.
"Yes; thero was ono room."
Thero was ono room ; but should I
object Thero was not somebody,
but something in it.
"What is that?" I asked curiously.
"A black box."
I looked astonished.
"Oh, thero is nothing to boalarmed
at," said my host, wondering at the
curious expression of countenanco I
had assumed.
"Tho fact of tho matter is this:
An officer, who is to bo attached to
tho cavalry regiment quartered in
tho town, telegraphed to me only
this morning for a particular room
which ho always uses. Ho said that
ho would Bend on his luggago before
hand, and arrive by tho last train to
night. Tho luggago, consisting of
this ono black box, arrived, not be
forehand, but on tho last train, and
as tho officer has not up to this mo
ment mado his appearance, and as 1
cannot imagine that ho is remaining
so late with any friendu in tho town,
thero will surely bo no harm in your
occupying his room,"
Accordingly I went very grateful
ly up to bed, and too tired oven to
tako tho precaution qf locking my
door. I surveyed tho black box for a
few minutes, wondered how officers
could use such ridiculous and un
sightly coffers for convoying their
impedimenta and very hhortly after
turned into bed.
I was dead tired, but, strange to
say, I was restless and could not
sleep; indeed I was, if anything,
overtired.
I was oxcitod with my rapid jour
noy, excited with tho thought of bco
ing Annabel, worried with tho pro
lixity of tho landlord and curious
about tho black box.
I was gradually becoming excited
about this box. L fancied all sorts
of horrors. My mind wandered
from Greonacro, tho murderer, to
tho horriblo Pan tin tragedy; from
Portia to Bluebeard; from tho dra
matic narrative of tho "Mistl too
Bough" to tho thrilling tragedy of
tho "Iron Chest," which I had seen
during Mr. Charles Kean's manage
ment nt tho Princess theater.
And thon I suppose from sheer fa
tiguo I must have dozed.
A suddon and sharp click awoko
mo I
I sat bolt up in bed and listened.
Not a sound.
Tho box again fascinated me; bo,
shrinking down beneath tho sheets
again, I watched it.
Slowly very slowly inch by inch,
I Baw tho lid of tho box movo.
Thero was no uso denying it 1
was in a terriblo fright. I don't
mind tho natural, but I havo a holy
honor of tho supernatural. I was
in a fevered, nervous and untortu
nato state, and in that horriblo con
dition botwoou sleeping and waking
I hardly know what I was about.
Still tho hd of tho box rose grad
ually. Thero was no doubt about it.
Then a head appeared and it
looked stealthily around tho room.
I instantly pretended to fall asleop,
and gavo a very good imitation of a
snore.
Tho head lengthened into u body.
Tho lid of tho box flow back, and a
short, thickset man stopped out of
his hiding place.
It was no ghost.
Ho paid no attention to my jewel'
ry, but made at onco for tho door.
Ho walked as noiselessly as a cat,
and slipped quietly out of the room.
Tbero waa no timo to bo lost. I
hurried on ft fiv r.itiehs of clothing
provided m . If v. Ai a stout walk
itx'jfi id:. V ( -lv t. inr 1 uvl handy,
thrust jhy money nritl jewels irilo
my iiockets and stalled off on the
purbiiit.
I was wido awnko by this timo,
and wan now terribly eager to arrest
my inidnirrht visitor.
I wai d -cerrained not to nrouso the
Jiouro u-til it was absolutely neccs
rary. t
Tho clock struck threo as I darted
into tho passago to surprise him.
Down Btaira 1 went in loss than no
timo.
But I was too late. Thosa minutes
occupied in collecting my valuables
and slipping on my things wero all
wasted timo.
Thero was no traco of him. It
was terribly dark in tho passages,
and I was rather nervous of a sud
den encounter in tho dark. !
Besides ho might havo firearms,
while I was comparatively unarmed.
Tho notion of coming-flop up against
him in tho pitch darkness extin
guished some portion of my enthu
siasm. Besides, while I was reflecting
what to do and whero to go, I found
that I had lost myself entirely. I
know nothing nbout tho ins and outs
of tho rambling old hotel, and I had
not taken my bearings and quite
forgot tho number of my room.
I wandered about tho passages for
quite half an hour, and at lost, after
a fruitless search for tho mysterious
man in tho box, I happily discovered
a half open door and found out my
room by my boots.
Now camo the question what to do?
Thero was no traco of tho man in tho
room. Tho door of tho room was
open as I loft it, but tho black box
was shut.
What should I do ? Sh ould I alarm
tho house and get railed a fool for
my pains, supposing iho box was dis
covered empty? Should I lif t tho hd
and risk everything in a final tussle?
Should I lock tho door from tho out
side or lock tho door from tho inside
and go to bed again ?
I went deliberately up to the box
and struck it violently .with my
stick. It was not quite closed after
all, and I heard to my burpriso a
howl of pain from tho inaido.
As luck wotdd havo it, Iliad got my
man after all. My mind was instant
ly mako up. I darted suddenly back,
gavo tho box another violent crack
with my stick, rushed out of tho room
and looked tho door.
And then I shouted with might
and main. A pell pull was handy
and I pealed at it. Up camo half a
dozen waiters, and, lastly, up cane
tho pursy landlord of tho Drei Lieb
chen. Having collected my forces, 1
opened tho door. Wo wero only just
in time, for tho window was wido
open, and with ono bound across the
room I just managed to securoliis
last retreating leg.
I dragged tho culprit back into the
middle of tho room and mado him
show his guilty face.
"Max I" cried tho landlord and tho
waiters with ono voice.
Thoyknow the object of his visit
when they looked into the black
box, for there woro secreted every
atom of silver knives, forks, spoons
and dishes which the household
possessed-.
Tho mystery was soon explained.
Tho midnight visitor was a dis
charged waiter, and ho had hit upon
tho happy expedient of tho black box
and tho false telegram in order to
conveniently rob tho house.
Tho thief was immediately handed
over to tho polico. Tho detestable
boxwaB dragged out of my room into
tho passago. I locked mysolf into
tho room nnd slept without a break
until ovory boll in Anuasborg woko
mo out of my slumbers and l-cmindod
mo it was morning.
As for my dear Annabel, sho mado
far moro of a hero of mo as all good
women do than I really deserved,
and after dinner that night, over tho
walnuts and tho Avino, with a dear
littlo hand resting cozily in mine
under tho tablo I told tho assembled
guests, with as much picturesque
forco and dramatic intensity as 1
could muster, tho true and authentic
legend of "A Night at tho Droi Lieb
sclion; or, tho Landlord, tho Lackey
and tho Black Box." Clemont V.
