Darby, a hop-buyer for Pass & Co., of
Iluiton-on-Treut, England, probably
the largest brewers in the world, said
yesterday: "I don't kuow where we
aro to get our hops this year. For
many years the county of Kent bus
been the chief point of hop produc
tion in England, but except last year,
when tho crop was very large, the
yield has become steadily smaller,
compelling us to uso hops grown in
Germany and other countries in
northern Europe. American hops
contain a larger pereentagoof extract
than the European vaiiety, but un
til quite recently they wero careless
ly cured and h.idly packed, aud con
sequently told for far less than they
would had proper care been exercls
od. This year the English and Ger
man hop crops aie a failure,owiug to
too much heat early in the growth
of tho plant, and then wet weather
