public authority. They never want
nily tired a shot in any strike. Tin
men were sent to Ilemestead only

regular employes, thoroughly tried
and Must worthy, others were vouch
ed for. They did not go Into Pen

arms were shipped from Chicago

were not opened until the strikers
opened fire and it became a mutter

Labor. The replies, in substance,
were that the Pinkerton agency
owned about 250 rlflcs,400 pistola.and
equal number of clubs, all deposited
at Chicago. In all tho branches of
tho firm there never had at any one
time mote than 800 persons in its
employ. Employes were advised ex
actly what they were todo,uud were
perfectly at liberty to refuse employ
ment In which they objected. All
men sent to Homestead knew the
nature of the employment. Barges
were not constructed for the purpose
of protection, were not lined with
Iron or steel, and could not resist
small arms. Tho meu would never

expedition If it hud known they

believed tho men would be uble to
land without a breach of the peace,
and the landing was to be mude at
night for the reason that the sheriff's

would be In bed. His sole desire was
by all means to avoid a breach of
tho peace, otherwise tho meu would
not have been permitted to go utile
authorized by tho governor or depu
tized by tho Bherlll. The only pur
pose was to put tho men upon
private property, and then protect it
