In tho middlo of Broadway ono of tho slitn necked and comnmjtivo legged chappies was striding along under a curi ous looking umbrella, as if not n drop of rain was falling. I noticed that tho umbrella had an miusunlly long handlo, with a prodigious hook on the end that at The creditor wore a half that. dozen coloiwl people who had at various tini -s clnuictl the lawyer's office and tried to arrange m legal papers in a condition bordering on "orderly." Thro'.ish this hook .1 stream of water was g-is'.ing out and h ft a rival 3t in the ilude'a wake. "The chappio was ?o overwhelmed by tho flattering remarks that vet e show ered upon him by tho rain frightened pedestrians, who had lost confi-ieuce in their umbrellas and had taken refuge in tho Btores, that ho condescended to stop into the room where I waj standing. This gave mo an opportunity to examine his funny looking umbrella. I found that it was so constructed as to curl tip around the rim when opened, forming a complete gutter, like those around the eaves of houses. This gutter, of conrr e, caught tho rain as it ran down the man sard roof of tho umbrella, aud kept it from dripping down to the g-ound and splashing the chappie's ice c; c iia trou sers. By a slight tilt of tho umbrella tho water thus caught was thrown to a common center, which was the entrance to the sewer that runs down through the umbrella's handle and out to the ground. "There, you see, is tho riddance of the umbrella's defect as a protection from rain. The dude proudly told mo that it was tho latest thing in 'Lnnuun;' that all tho 'fellahs' over there were using them; that he had just come from 'Lun nun,' and had brought the umbrella over in tho ship with .him. He hadn't said anything to the chappies about it, be cause he wanted to knock 'em all out by being the first 3een on Broadway with the newest English invention. Ho know they would all go wild about it and he was glad of it. "Well, when I get back to Now York 1 don't expect to see any other kind of umbrella carried by tho chappies." St. Louis Globe-Democrat. A Iell l'lsh ultli 2,500 Suckers. Mr. Edwards, tho taxidermist, has just received a largo octopus, or devil fish, which was captured off Old Town by some fishermen. Tho creaturo weighed over bixty pounds and had arms three feet eight inches in length. On each of its eight tentacles or arms thero were 320 suckers, making a grand total of 2,500. Tho octopus had attached itself to a fish hooked on a trawl and was drawn up with it. Tho same firm has also received a young albino deer, a buck, shot on Windby island. It has two-pronged horns and is supposed to bo about two years old. Tho natural color for a fawn is brown, with white spots, but the color of this ono is white, with blown spots. Adoo was shot on tho island some timo ago, so that it is thought thero must bo al bino blood in tho deer on tho island. Tho doe was secured by 2Ir. Edwards somo timo ago, and now tho pair are to be oxhibited in somo of tho shop win dows down town. Tho deerskins aro comparatively easy to preserve, but no Itors. In fact the payment was de layed so long that the rfciuis were finally consolidated and placed in the hands of a collector. The collector was told of the lawyers weakness and his delight at being told of his resemblance to tho picture of AVcb ster suspended on his office wall. On tliis fact tho collector based his hopes of success. Ho went to the Lawyer's ofiice, and while waiting for an audience with the man of legal lore stood gazing at tho picture of Webster and then at the lawyer. Tho latter watched the collector meanwhile from be neath his heavy eyebrows. "Well, what do you think of it?" queried the lawyer of tho collector, glancing at the picture. "Splendid, splendid," replied tho man with the bill. "You couldn't have a better picture. Tho artist caught your expression perfectly. " and tho collector fingered the bill in his pocket. "Think it looks like mo. eh?" "Looks lileo you well, it's simply perfect." "Well, sir, that's a picture of Daniel Webster," and the lawyer he-he-ed with intense satisfaction and pleasure and asked what he could do for the visitor. Tho col lector said ho wanted to collect $20.70, and the lawyer sat down and drew his check. Rising from his seat and handing tho check to the collector tho lawyer rubbed his hands together and said, "And so you think Webster looked like me?" ."Oh, yes," replied tho collector, as ho opened tho office door, "about as much as ho did like me." and the door went to with a bang. Tliis itoiy is told of Charles Dick ens and ilr. Frederick Ouvry, the well known solicitor. On ono occa sion, Dickens was in treaty for a piece of land at the ba.k of Gad's Hill, tho proposed vendor being an old farmer, a keen old raiai of busi ness and a hard nut to crack. An interview was arranged with him ai Gad's Hill for a certain evening, and Mr. Ouvry came down for tho pur pose of being present when tho bar gain was struck. Dickens and Ouvry wero sitting over their wine when the old man was announced. "We had better go in," said Dickens. "2To, no," said tho astute lawyer-' "John" (to the butler), "show him into tlio study and take him a bottle of old port wine." Then, turning to Dickens. "A glass of port will do hhn no harm ; it will soften him." After waiting about twenty minutes they went into the study. Tho farmer was sitting lolt upright in an armchair, stern and uncompromising; the bottle of port had not been touched. The nego tiations then proceeded very much in favor of the farmer and the bar gain was struck. With a chuckle the old man then turned his attention to the port and finished the bottle. San Francisco Argonaut. He Broke Up the Game. In public, as well as in private, one should ever be mindful of the rights of others. Not long since a clergy man, accompanied by two young la dies, was traveling. It was nearing tho hour of midnight, yet they had not ordered their sleeping berths made up. Instead, they were indulg ing in a game of words trying to seo who could think of tho most words that begin with this or that letter. They spent half an hour or more on "A," and then went to "B" with a freshness that seemed to indicate that they intended, de?pite the late ness of the hour, to go to the end of tho alphabet. At any rate, that was tho impression they gave to tho tired man in tho berth opposite, who was trying in vain to sleep. Presently thero came a lull, when none of tho three seemed able to think of another B. Tho tired man took advantage of tho lull. Parting his curtain the least bit of a space, he shouted : "And 'bore3,' sir 'bores 1' " Har per's Young People. Making Fliophorin ly Electricity. The application of electricity to tho manufacture of phosphorus i3 expected to revolutionize the industry. Tho phos phorus is extracted from the usual ma terials by being intensely heated with carbon in an electric furnace. It is thus vaporized and is afterward collected in copper condensers. Tho latest pattern of furnace produces daily about 150 pounds of very poor phosphorus, with a lo-s of about 1 1 per cent, of total quan tity of tho raw material. The effect of this now development will be that a sin, do building which has been erected for tho purpose in England will soon be turning out half as much as tho world's present consumption.
