IT MEANS BUSINESS.
The Salem Board of Trado Con
sidering Manufactures.
Within the past few weeks several
manufacturing enterprises have been
proposed to the Salem Board of
trade. Eacli wauts a littlo help,
but they do not want it half as
badly as Salem wants the factories.
A special meetlug has been called
for next Fiiduy evening to consider
tliec propositions. One is for a
soap factory, which can bo had for
tho laud to put it on, Another is
for a plow and stove factory, which
wants a small bonus and two lots,
for which it guarantees to give work
to a number of mechanics. An
other is for a wagon aud buggy man
ufactory which will not only bring
with it many new families, but give
employment to much larger num
bers. ' '
Just now there is uothiug Salem
needs so bidly as moru manufactur
ing, productive industries, estab
lishments to give employment to
labor. The laboring man and the
producer must form tho bone and
sinew of any community, and Salem
should ofl'er every encouragement
to the upbuilding of these interests.
In this day factories cannot be lo
cuted and built up without local en
couragement, but we want the fac
tories and should make a hard pull
for them. Theie are now several iu
sight that can be had almost for the
usking, and the business men should
make every effort for them. Fac
tories are cheap at any price, that is
at any piico within reason. Let
theie be a rally at the Friday night
meetiug. It is the duty of every
member of the board of trade to be
present. Eveiy business man and
property owner should also make it
a point to attend this meetiug. It
is open to all. Everybody is wel
come. WILLAMETTE NOTES.
Two Eloquent and Powerful
mons on Sunday.
Sor-
At 10 o'clock the trustees, faculty,
alumni, uud students began to as
semble in the lecture room of the M.
E. church and promptly at 10:30
some two hundred stiong they
marched to tho seats leserved for
them iu the well-filled auditorium.
After the usual singing, the choir
rendered a magnificent anthem, in
whicli Mrs. Mary S. Kinney sang
tho solo. Dr. George oflered tho
morning prayer. Tho Baccalaureate
f-ermon was then delivered by Dr.
George Whltaker, president of the
Willamette Uuiversity, from Acts
XVII, 28, "For in Him wo live, and
move and have our being." Tho
speaker began thesearch to find, if it
were possible, a satisfaction to tho
hungry, thiratiug human heart out
hide of God. Tup systems of religion
which men have Invented and
nations believed were separately dis
ciifscd, their insufficiency pointed
out, ami logical, wholesome conclu
sions drawn from them. Ah no
extract of the sermon can furnish
any idea of the excellency of the
whole, wo sum up as follows, the
sermon was climacterec and step by
step tho speaker developed tho
theme and stood on higher planes
of investigation until the text was
reached us tho conclusion of the
wholf. Tho concluding words were
eloquent and masterly. Tho charge
to tlio class was iiripictsivc aud full
of sound advice.
In tho evening ut 7:33 a good
audience a-iembled to ..hear the
University sermon by Dr. W. P.
George. The choir sang nu excep
tionally beautiful anthem, und Rev.
G. M. Irwin led the congregation iu
praj er. The speaker of tho evening
then announced his text, from John
XIV, 8, "Philip Mdtb unto him,
Lord show us tho Father, and it
siilllceth us." After uu excellent
introduction ho begun to Inquire
scien-
m God,
Iu infancy both men uud nations,
are theists, and do not become utile
Istlo until they become separated
from God by sin. Atheism Is a
weak defence to excuse sin. As he
progressed, the speaker used illustra
tions singularly excellent, und tho
word painting was by a master.
'Pilose concerning tho existence of
the sun, from the Eiqulmaus' the
miners, and Brazilian's point of
view, and tho parallel of Christ,
"Gi-d njuuifest in the flesh lu whom
dwclleth ull the fullness of the God
head lu a body" and the sea water
were impresnivo and exceedingly
oltar. Dr. George Is a deep thinker
and the rea of upturned faces dem
onstrated that it Is a pleasure to
lUtc-u to him. To hear him Is the
only way lo get an adequate Idea of
his excellence In thluklng.
