OIT7 EXCITED.
1 Desperate Race War Probable in
Guthrie
Guthkik, O. T., Juno 13. there
is creat excitement lu this city, oc
casioned by two criminal assaults bj
negroes upon white women. A
negro lad named Holley assaulted
Mrs. Charles R. Moore, the wife of a
freighter. He was arrested and a
mob surrounded the jail, threaten
ing to lynch him. The negroes
claim Holley Is Innocent although
ho confessed his guilt to the sherifl,
and a race war seined imminent for
a time. "Judgo" Perkins, a uegro
lawyer, was spokesman for the col
ored men. During the excitement
he said: "Let tho whites harm that
man and the town will bo in ashes
before morning." The sheriff smug
gled tho prisoner from jail and look
him to Wichita, Kansas. The sec-
ml outiage was made upon the wife
of James Gcnken, by nu unknown
negro, who escaped. A poste is on
his trull, and ill lynch him if he is
found.
At midnight information was re
ceived that the negro who outiaged
Mrs. Genken has beeu overtaken by
the potse, six miles south of town,
itud shot dead. This news greatly
Intensified the excitement, and the
UPirroesure threatening violence.
Guthhik, June, 13... At 1 o'clock
this morning one or two nervy
Hirers ordered a lot of negroes who
vere stationed on the corner uext
to the jail to move on. Several
iffered resistence, but the olllceis
ijed Ihtir clubs eflectlvely. Several
decent negroes jumped on dry goods
toxes aud made speeches to the
(jxcittd crowds. Ofllcers Rtnehardl,
Kitchen, Kelly aud Kehl were there.
Two or three shots were fired. A
ilg burly uegro named Perkins
yelled "hang the editor of the
Newt-." No sooner were these
words out when Bill Dlugham, Jack
l'earney, Doc Roberts, Dick Reaves
Walter Taylor aud others said "try
it ou if you dare." Sheriff Hixou
nud deputies rushed in and quelled
the disturbances aud the excittd
people were quickly dispersed. Men,
women aud children are at this
moment ou the streets. The editor
of the News walked down Okla
homa avenue between two ofllcers
at 12 o'clock, seemingly secure.
A company to patrol tho city 1ms
been organized aud placed under the
leadership of good men. Groups of
negroes stand on every corner, aud
manifest an intention to take the
city If necessary. Reoyes's Broth
ers' place on Seifond street, Is the
rendezvous of tho committee, aud
the place is crowded with father,
and husbands. Republicans and
Democrats alike, take the stand that
tho negroes' reign is at an end iu
Oklahoma. The city is actually
alive with armed men, who are
ready to fight to the death if ueed
be. E. P. McCabe, ex-auditor of
Kausas, is held responsible for the
crimes being committed and violence
is feared. He c.mnot bo found to
night and is evidently in no way
desirou-i of showing up. Whl-jtles
are blowing aud there are shouts
aud yells from every quarter of the
city. This beautiful city of 10,000
people is a pandemonium, aud uo
one sleeps this night. Tho yell of a
determined mob is momentarily ex
pected, uud no power on earth teems
able to now save the brutal ravlsher's
life. The electric lights have beeu
extinguished, aud it seems uow that
the worst may happen. Captain
Cooper, one of Payne's original Oka
lahoma boomers, reached here at 11
o'clock with seventeen men. They
are determined aud nothing stiort of
a lynching will satisfy them. At 2
this morning a large number of men
are parading tho streets. There is
no telling what may happen. The
sherifl ami police aie resolute. The
excitement is intense. Negroes are
congregated on every corner, aud
trouble at tho jail seems certain, as
another mob has assembled iu the
Vicinity.
