a sensation among Republican poli
tician?. It is believed to bo nothing
more than a declaration of war by
tho Blaine forces against the Harri
son. Tho significant utterances of
Piatt immediately after his return
from Washington causes tho general
bolief that tho attack on Harrison
was Umpired by Blaine. Tho inti

affairs displayed in tho manifesto
causes the Impression that Blaine
supplied tho information.
"Piatt is noted for his consistent
policy of never talking for publica

Buro that tho ground underneath
him is firm. Tho fact that Piatt so
vigorously attempted to cut from
under the feet of Harrison every
claim for consideration at the hands
of tho Republican party. Is taken as
proof positive that ho has assurance
from Blaine that ho will accept the
nomination. Piatt's caution, which
is notable, would have otherwise
restrained him from placing him
self in a position which would cause
his retirement as a leader if Mr.
Harrison should bo nominated,"

Messengers Done All They
Could.
GUTitltiB, O. T., June 3.- Details
of the iobbery of Wells, Fargo &
Co's express car, on the Santa Fe
train, makes a story of unexampled
outlawry on the part of the bandits
and brave resistance on the iart of
the custodlane of tho company's
property. The roblers were at work
nearly one hour attempting to in
timidate the messengers into sub
mission, and during the battle be
tween thejBiesseugors and the ban
dits fully 200 shots were fired, and
not a man was wounded. The rob
bery was doubtless committed by the
notorious IXtlton gang, for whom
large rewards are still standing.
Two masked men jumped Into
the engineer's cab from tho tender,
md covering the engineer and fire
man, commanded them to run tho
train to tho stockyards aud stop
there at a given signal. The engi
neer aud flremau obeyed, as to have
resisted would mean death. When
the train stopped, the two robbers
wore joined bv five masked com
panions. The leader commanded
the engineer aud fireman to walk
back to the express car and com
manded the fireman to break open
the dor. E. C. Whittlesey, rnes
neuger, and J. H. Reihl, guard, un
tielpstln"g what was going on, had
blown out the light, and refused to
illow anyone to enter. The bandits
opened tire upon the car from till
-Ides, but tho two men within re
-ponded promptly, aiming all shoU
it the doors. The highwaymen shot
Into tho car from all quarters, firing,
however, to no effect, for the mes
sengers stood their ground. In the
meanwhile tho robbers chopped a
hole In the door largo enough to
admit a body, and the fireman was
told to crawl Into tho car. Till--placed
him between two fires, and
Engineer Mack, seelug it meant
death to his companion, explained
tho situation to the messengers and
told them to cease firing. The rob
bers then entered tho express car,
covered the inmates with a gun,
aud with sledge aud chisel broke
open two safes aud robbed them of
everything valuable.
The robbers are described by pas
sengers uh being well dressed and of
gentlemanly bearing. Tho leader
apologized to the engineer for n
rough remark made by one of his
men. Tho nmount secured by the
robbers is unknown, as the express
company has made no statement.
