Tabby Whipped an Alligator.
A house cat belonging to Mr. Walton
was in tho habit of goiug to tho river
and feeding 011 mussels and such fish as
it could got, and it was noticed several
times that whon tho cat moved along
tho bank a ripplo in tho water showed
that an alligator kept paco with it in
ho wator. Tho cat, however, was
awnro or tlio alligator s presence, unr
showed no signs of fear.
One day tho cat approached too near
the wator in its eagerness to get a lish
and was gripped by tho hind legs by an
alligator about threo feet long. Tho cat
made a spring and got away, but its leg
was bitten badly and bled freely. Tho
tasto of blood heemed to put tho alligator
into a frenzy, for' it camo out on tho
bank and continued tlio pursuit. The
oat turned on its enemy, and thon began
0110 of tho fiercest fights seen in a long
timo. Tho cat was so quick that it was
impossible for tho alligator to get a bito
at it, and tho result was that tho saurian
soon oudeavorcil to beat a retreat to tho
water.
But tho cat now began an offensive
attack and cut off tho way, biting tho
alligator in tho throat and tender spots
under tho arms until the roptilo was
bleeding and almoBt exhausted. The
light continued, and when at last tho
alligator gavo up it was bleeding from
a hundred wounds. Tlio cat was fceem
ingly unhurt, oxcopt in tho wounded
log, which was injured beforo the fight
began. Vernon (Fla.) Cor, St. Louis

'Lcrtlon Day In IHntile Island.
'Lection day in Rhode Island is not
tho day tho votes are cast, but tlio day
the governor is inaugurated. On voting
day there aro fires in the houses, and
the people wear overcoats and shawls.
But on 'lection day, which is n week or
so later, all tires aro put out for the sea
son, the overcoats are laid away in
camphor, and the little girls have fresh
white dresses. This ia tlio custom, now
of course somewhat moderated, but
elderly people toll that in their day it
was more rigidly enforced than a law
A housekeeper that would rebuild a fire
after 'lection day was regarded as un ec

whom one would bo chary of fending
tubs or of setting up neighborly ways.
An old lady relates her misery as a child

reasonableness of tho custom
In other parts of the country May

fires and putting on summer clothes.
After that there wero no weak conces

Even in this enlightened day there aro
parts of tho country where, after the
high domestic rite of housecleaning is
established, the fires aro extinguished
and the grates aro stopped up until

From an archaeological point of view
an interesting discovory has just been
made iu this neighborhood, about half a

the design represents a Medusa's head
surrounded by a garland of tho uiobt
dolicato design intertwined with birds

aro most perfect. But perhaps tho floor
with the most beautiful debigu over un

SALEM, OREGON.
Tho Indlim Ultes "Uauncd Truck."
Tlio California Indian is as a rulo
an epicure. Time his forefathers
feasted on acorn bread, dried grass
hoppers, roasted angleworms, tmd
even on occasion browsed on tho suc
culent alfileria, liko their four footed
intimates. But the modern Indian is
not built that way. He has as keen
an appreciation of tho good things of
the tablo as his white acquaintances.
Like tho old Arizona miner, his idea
of heaven is a place where one can
livo on "canned track" for an indefi
nito period, and wherever he swarms
tho merchants with whom ho deals
cater to this tasto in every possiblo
way. "Canned truck" of every kind
is kept in quantity, and tho gaudier
the labels the better tho sales. San
Francisco Chronicle.

Tho Etymology or "Umpire."
Whon we have found out a new oty
mology, what is it but a now instanco
of tho recovery of an old and forgotten
predication? When, for example, we
learned that "umpire" has dropped
an initial n, and that tho word repre
sents non-par ("odd, single"), wo find
thnt the fact of his standing botweeu
two discoidant parties as a single ar
bitrator was the predication of which
this functionary was tho subject.
