l'OINTS OF WhAVKIt'S SPKECH
It Is with pleasure that I meet you
today. This is my first visit to Ore
gon and my first speech lu your
state. I remember when a boy,
many of my old neighbors turned
their facts westward, destined for
Oregon, nnd they are hero today. I
have longed to visit your state and
t xehango ideas. Wo are all citizens
of one jti eat government; our inter
ests are identical. Using a Knights
of Labor expression, "an Injury to
ono is nu iujury to all." I have been
talking to the people for a long time
and for the past two years I liaye
nvcrnped ono speech a day. I have
addieshcd tho citizens of North C'ai
ollna, Miioourl, Texas, Kaunas, Nt
biaaka, Georgia, Ohio and other
states and I nm piepared to Bay thai
we aro today lu tho midst of a tre
mendous political revolution. It is
an upheaval that will oxcol all
pluvious ellbrts. It Is not warllko
but peaceful. It Is mightier because
It ailects more people; widespread
becauRo it permeates all tho states
nnd counties. Tlio moneyed sharks
are cilticisiug tho labor movement
and say that wo should not meet
and consult our gilevnnu.es. They
tell us to keep out of politics, build
belter sheds for our cattle and stay
at homo and leave It to them.
I will tell you tho cause of this
upheaval. You are farmers and
raise a eurplus to feed tho world.
What kind of a market have you?
A compotltlvo ono. It has bten
truthfully said that uo man lives
unto himself." We ralso a surplus
of wheat something like 100,000,000
bushels, but not If wo had all tho
bread wo wauted to eat. Our wheat
comes In competition with tho India
wheat, which Is raised by slayes,
who get 8J cents per day. These
poonle live ou crooked wheat and
rice, aro clad poorly and Bleep on
tho iloor. This wheat comes iu
competition with high pi iced labor.
You sell everything In competition
with all products of tho world. But
It is uot all In Belling. When it
comes to buying we do not find a
low and competitive market, but a
pioled and high market. You buv
your reapers aud twlno from trusts.
You tako your wheat to milk,,
where you recelvo prices that are
fixed by tiusts. When you buy
gummed goods, you pay tho oil
cloth trust a royalty; oil, tiio btand
ard Oil Co.; sugar, tho sugar trust.
Everything you iiho on your table
and In your house which you do not
produce you buy of trusta. The
cradle Is made of lumber controlled
by trusts. And to It goes from
youth to old age, and w hen the old
man passes away ho Is laid away In
a colli n purchased of trusts. And
still tho gentlemen have the, cheek
to tell us to go home and work
iiarder nnd not talk about these
things. We must cut out ordestroy
tho corporations. God never created
a coiporatlon. Governments aio
founded for tho benefit of men, not
corporal Ions. Thoy aro artlllclal bo
Ings and furnish another instance
where the strong absorb tho weak.
I have the most supreme contempt
for a man who will nupport his
party ut tlio sacrifice of his family,
We linvo almost double tho amount
of people to nupport than at tho
close of tho war. It tnl.ea more
money, more clothes and mote food
to run uh now. In 1805 there were
Hixtten hunched million dollars in
circulation; today there Is 2.5 per
cent. loss. The money has not Into
tho wrong pocket. If a shark tells
jou that we have got plenty of
money, abk him who has got It; and
If hu can olio anyone who has moro
than he wants, build for mo. I am
like the old German; I wish all wore
rlult uh It would bo belter for the
poor man. The money should nut
be lioaidcd up lu bank vaults, but
placed In circulation. We want a
hiitHcu-ut circulation for the demand.
That'n what we tiet-d,
The thieo grand dlvlsions.nre mon
ey, transportation nnd telegraphy.
How are they handled? Congress
has let out tuoMy to the bankers,
who jwwe as middlemen. Talk
about 6UbtreiiMur; Hare la uot a
man who wears hair that can ex.
plain awaj the ntteiiBWi that sur
round the preront syntein, Tho
framora can givejudt as good secur
ity on loans as the bankers, How
Highest of all in Leavening Power.
ABSOLUTELY PURE
much bettor oft you would be If you
could borrow direct You would
not havo to pay high rale of Inter,
est which Is sucking tho last drop of
live blood from your veins. Loan
it according to population of Btates.
The school fund plan Is a good one.
It Is jnstns easy to loau $100,000 as
fcl,000. If It Is safe In ono Instance
It is in another.
Transportation Is controlled not
by congress but by railroad kings.
Who owns the telegraph? Jay
Gould. Tho farmer and labor move
ment Is for n larger circulation. Tho
key to the time locks of your vaults,
containing their millions of wealth,
is remonetlzation of silver. Place
tho white metal on an equal footing
with gold and prosperous times will
follow. Lot gold aud silver walk
hand in hand together as in days
gone by. If wo cannot produce
enough silver to make the circula
tion equal to the demand, Issue
treasury notes. A larger circulation
wo must have. Congress don't want
silver remouotlzed but tho people do.
Our congressmen aro controlled
by tho gold bugs; that's what's
the matter. They danco to the
music of Wall Street. Scarco money
thoy want. Wo want to look more
to domestic affairs aud less to
foreign. Place gold and sllveron an
quit! footing as our fathers did.

feasance in office, on charges
preferred by Hon. J. D. Edgar,
member of parliament for West
Ontario, assumed a new and almost
unexpected shape. It is two weeks
slnco Edgar, from his place in the
house, charged that Blr Adolphe
Caron had as a minister of the crown
advocated tho subsidizing of certain
railway companies to the amount of
$1,000,000, ho himself being person
ally and largely interested in one of
the companies, and further that out
of tho subsidies, from men who were
Intrusted with ependlng publio
monoy, Sir Adolpho had received a
large sum which he had expended
in bribery, spending over $100,000 in
endeavoring to secure the election of
himself and twenty-two others.
Edgar, on thatoccasion, moved that
the house appoint a committee to
inqulro iuto the truth of the charges.
Sir John Thompson, minister of
justice, and a conservative member
of tho house opposed this proceeding
on the ground that thej charges
wero not sufficiently well defined.
Hon. David Mills, Slrltlchard Cart
wright and Hon. J. D. Edgar in
their speeches all accused Sir
Adolphe of taking public moneys to
debauch constituencies, .with con
spiracy, and with having made a re
turn of his election expenses in
Quebec amounting to about one
tenth of what was really spent. On
tho reopening of the debate yester
day Hon, Mackenzie Howell, minis
ter of the militia, eut a large portion
of tho ground from under the feet of
tho opposition by abandoning the
position occupied by tha government,
and shoving in an amendment to
Edgar's motion that a royal com
mission be appointed to take evi
dence on all the charges and to lay
it before the house when completed.
Tho debate was continued through
tho night. Sir Richard Cartwright
moved as an amendment to the
amendment that all tho words in
Hon. Mackenzie Howell's amend
ment bo struck out and words to this
eflect substituted: "That this house
refused to allow the investigation
into these charges to be removed
from its Jurisdiction and to be com
mitted to a body composed of one
or moro commissioners appointed by
Adolpho Caron aud his colleagues,
they to allow the charges to be
dropped and a new sot of charges
prepared by Sir Adolpho Caron and
his colleagues to bo tried, and that
this houeo views the matter an a
violation of Its privileges, as unpar
liamentary and unjust, and designed
to dofeat tho ends of Justice," After
an extended debate, a division re
jected ayes 03, nays 123, showing a
majority for the government of 02.
