Vrt Uig John." tho Canghnawaga Indian haw for the kt fourteen years on every New Tour's day made this portions trip Peculiar as it may twin. Big John has always taken some one with him on tbeec trips. This year he mode the samo daitgaroos ahoot, but it will Ix his last On the morning of the first of the year Big John, who liveadown the nver from Lnrhine, came np to tlie village to see if any one hul come up from Montreal to uucouiMuy him. lie found two young men. ntter atrangers to him and to each other. One. Uuorge Wait, was front Montreal, while the other. Frederick Goyor, came from "back countne." The men walked down to lhg John's boom), a distance of three miles Hero they launched their boat, nnd tho party was increafed by one more. Big John's son Mnrray. It took only half an hour to work out through the ice and heavy water to reach the top of the rapids. An the boat approached them Big John stood up in the stern with bis long pud die in his hand ready for the shoot Rocks glistened on all sides with their icy coats; huge waves dashed high leaped over the frail boat and threatened to swamp her. Ooyer was kept busy bailing out with Wait, while Murray obeyed the commands of his father Ooyer describes the passage as follows "Fmui the time wo struck the rapids until we reached the lower end of them John seemed a being iiispired His eyes were fairly glistening and shooting tire 1 thought they would leap from their sockets with tho tremendons excite ment. His long, thin paddle would sweep the air liko a flash and be buried in tho foaming water, swinging the boat hither nnd thither, avoiding this jutting rock and then thnt one. A continuous stream of commands in French flowed from his lips to his Km Murray, who waa nearly the equal of his father in dexterity. Now and then he directed me in broken English to do something. Ho was a picture that no artist would ever forget, and that would haunt him nntil ho had reproduced it on canvas." Tho trip was one of excitement and peril from beginning to end tho boat p.iKsing from ono rnpid to another m succession, it filled continually with water and kept Wait and Uoyer busy bailing. Wheu they reached tho whirl pool, the last nnd most dangerous sjiot, Big John gave his final command, anil it camo ncaralso being his last on earth. Ho shouted to Murray, tho boy, to pad dle hard, and as the lad shifted his posi tion to take a longer and stronger stroke ho lost his balanco and fell over ou his back in tue bottom of the boat. Tho mighty Indian, quick as a wink, threw himself down flat in the boat, and thus saved it from being capsized, the heavy waves throwuig twenty buckets or water all over tho party. Big John was up again in a second, and with two or threo powerful strokes ho spun tho boat around and seut her noso straight into tho waves again. Tho wholo incident did not occupy inoro than six seconds, and then the boat shot down into tho homo channel in a few seconds more. Big John throw his paddlo into tho bottom of tho boat, and. almost oxhnusted from the violent exertion and excitement, sank down into tho stern sheets. AH danger was pasted, but ho fully realized what a closo shave tho paity had had as ho pointed back nt tho whirlpool and said, "Jo croyais qn'ou allait an ciel tout roud." Which was translated, "1 thought wo wero going to heavon, boat and all." Tho boat was pulled out at Jacques Car tior's landing by willing hands. Big John gavo Uoyer his paddlo as a ro uiiuder of the trip, and announced that tlmt was tho last time ho wonld over shoot tho Lachmo rapids in winter. Cor.
