Effects of Fhost on Fkuit.
Hill land about Salem must be de
sirable for fruit, as tbe frost that cut
down oi elmi (Is in Califomia and
Southern Oregon, April 12tb, did no
haim on bill oichards, while those
on low lands are badly damaged,
in many uubs tbe stone fruits being
all destroyed. This t-rcnis to be the
case on the Willamette river, below
Oiegon City, as old eettlerb and well
known oi chai dials there told S. A.
Clarke, at Poitlaud, a few days ago,
that cherries, peaches, plums and
prunes weio deatioyed, while back
two miles, on land 300 fret higher,
fruit w uninjured. He also beaul
from a fruit-grower on the Washing
ton side of the Columbia, that the
orchards near Vancouver were badly
injured. Tt is known that orchard-
in Southern Oregon puttered greatly,
the exception being in favor of the
bill sides near Ashland. It is a!o
tiue that the same froat, April 12th,
did much harm in California. Mr.
Clarke says that he pets no evidence
of frost in bis orchaid, and thinks
that while fruit on tbe pi utile Iuih
suffered somewhat the red hills are
all right. Fruit growers iu the fav
ored localities will be apt to find a
fair demand for their products this
year.
