New England Celebrity. The re.iding at Unity church tonight by Miss Hale of the distinguished family of Edward Everett Hale, of Boston, will bring before Salem people a veritable New England celebrity. Not often does there penetrate thus far west a person who knew Emerson and who has had the honor of sitting at the feet of the sage of Concord. Miss Hale is a lady of culture aud vigor of in tellect. She has been spending the winter in California and has con Bented to give readings at several of the larger cities. Remarkable Men's Meeting in the Morning. TWO LARGE WOMEN'S MEETINGS. A Memorable Sunday in the Religious History of Salem. men's meeting. After half a hour of slugiug, Pres. Whltaker of Willamette university opened the meeting with an elo quont prayer. The vast auditorium was packed with men only. They kept pouring In until the sermon proper, filled the aisles, climbed up into the galleries over the pulpit and took up stundiug room as usual. Mr. Greenwood sang "Drifting Away from God" with great sweet ness and a wonderfully distinct clearness of enunciation. Mr. Mills now read the passage of Scripture where Christ feasted with publicans and sinners, and rebuked the Scribes and the Pharisees with the parables of the Prodigal Son, the lost sheep, the lost piece of sil ver, etc. After singing. Rev. Mills spoke from the text found in Rev. 3:20, the words "Behold I stand at the door and knock." The central thought was that any man could know God, by following a few simple diiections, aud show ed thai God was trying to get into the hearts of men. All knew it was right to serye God and to let him rule in our hearts. At many pass ages in the sermon many persons were moved to tears and deeply nfiected. At the close some ten or fifteen arose for prayers. Mr. Green wood sang "No Christ, No Hope in Jesus" while the ushers passed the cards to be sigued by those con verted. notes. ' One woman only was driven by curiosity to go up the steps and asked the usher to open the door a litMe she wanted to see a thousand men all by themselves once. She was gratified. It's enough sight easier to sit down than to staud up, said Mr. Greenwood. The men's singing was a little bass. There was an unusual attendance of political candidates, businessmen, professional men and other hard cases on the back seats. There was a sprinkling of Chinese present. The percentage of bald persons was very small. women's meetings were held at the Presbyterian and Congregational churches in the forenoon, preaching by Revs. Kel lerman and Whitaker. Full houses greeted them. evening meetings, Besides Mr. Mills' regular evening service, Rev. Gwynne, D. D. ad dressed a crowded house of church members only. Ho preached from Isaiah Hi, 1 and several arose for prayers. , the sauhatii schools. In the Sabbath schools tbero were special services aud consisted of an inquiry meeting in each, conducted by the several pastors assisted by the regular workers at the Mills meetings. The Democoatlo primaries Saturday re sulted in a defeat of the Rowley D'Arey faction of Salem.
