Right In the midst of tho busiest part of the day, right in tho thick of tho busiest crowd, a man stopped In front of the Tacoma building and took out his gold watch. Instantly another mnn sprang forward, fastened on tho watch With a llerce and nervous grasp, stooped for the spring which should carry him into safety somowhere In tho crowd then paused, halted, turned full on tho gentleman and slowly lifted his hands to his eyes. Tho frightful, savage face had changed swiftly to a sad nnd ghost ly ono. Tho fiery eye of a highway man had grown soft and mild as a child's. "No," ho said, with pathetic sadness "no, I am starving, but 1 cannot steal," and ho loosened his grasp on tho watch and' stood there held and help less. The Kcutleiunn had seized his wrist at tho first attack and had quick ly formed a plan to capture or kill the bold robber. But tho changed situa tion disarmed him. "Arc you hungry?" he asked, still hoKIIng the wrist. A crowd had pressed about theui. "Gentlemen, you havo done a great deal for ine," he said, weakly. "I do uot belong on this level. You havo saved mo from far worso than death. I thank you." And ho turned away so sadly that tears came Into business men's eyes. It is a fearful thing to see a strong man in agony. "Do you know who ho is!" asked nn insurance adjuster late from tho ele vator. "No," said tho man who had started tho subscription; "1 don't know, and I don't care.
