board was attended by Mrs. A. E.
Miller, Geo. Hughes, W. H. Odell,
J. Reynolds, C. 13. Moores, aud
Profs. Anderson and Hans j of the
faculty. Some routine business of
the college was transacted and Prof.
Arnold was appointed to manage
University business until a new
president is elecl.d and takes
charge. Prof. Matthews has not
declined to accept the presidency of
Willamette, but cannot until after
a meeting of the board the of South
ern California school, of which he is
acting president.
The F. D. Criticisms are being
made of the organization of the Sa
lem Fire department, lack of author
ity, etc. The department iB a vol
unteer organization largely, there
being but a few meu under part pay.
Still it is an important protective
branch of our city government, and
the people cannot afford to grow
Indifferent about it. If there Is
anything wrong It should be rem
died at ouco aud the defect made
public.

the residence of the bride's parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Leo Willis, Capital
slid Center streets, by Rev. H. H.
Brown, in the presence ofthe fam

Portland and Albany. The Willis
mansiou was richly decorated with
ilowers. The Iront parlor was

arrayed upon a background of gold
and orange blosoms. The cere
mony was performed under a huge
bell of rotec, lined with sliver wed

person of Master Freddie Stump),
ruug by satin ribbons as the bridal
procession entered.
The guesls aud wedding party en
joyed the rich hofpi'ality and bles
sings of Falher and Mother Willis.
The entire social event was conduct
ed with exqulslto tuste and refine
ment, that Is characteristic of this
old Southern family. An ava'anche
of congratulations will bury Mr.
and Mis. Piper out of sight for the
present, as they proceed to take pos
session of their new home In the
Northwist.
