Thrj liar Things AH Tlielr Own IVny and Cut t'p S'dnio Ourcr Capers. An KnglLili gentleman who lias lived many yearsln India tells some quccrstorles about the stocrcd monkeys that are a great nuisance in some parts of that country No ono Is allowed to molest them. They run about the streets, help themselves to whatever thoy please at the shopj, rob orchards and gardens and play havoc gen erally. To thrush them Is regarded as a misdemeanor, nnd to shoot a monkey might calico a second mutiny. Tho gentleman had a garden where crew delicious fruits. ThosacrcdmonkeyseaBlly scaled the walls and helped thembelvcs. They were not content with simply catinc, but amused themselves with throwing half mnnclicil fruit at cocli other. To shoot these pcstH wan out of tho question, and to lilt them with stones was Impossible, as thoy easily dodged any mlssllo that might bo thrown at them. An idea struck the Englishman one day, and ho at once pro ceeded to carry It into effect, with great Bticcess. Ho got a lurc.e basket of tho largest po tatoes that were to bo found and had them boiled. When they were scalding hot he hail basket and potatoes placed under one oMJie trees. Tho monkeys wcro watching these movements from the trees. Presently every monkey seized a hot potato, nnd then followed tho mast unearthly screeches nnd chntterinRS. A monkey will never let ro any article of food that he onco gets hold of, even if he has to die, nnd these monkeys, truo to their nature, would not drop the hot potatoes. They held them in one band nnd then in the ctlier, and then they would take a blto and scald their mouths, and roll in the dust, writhing with pain, but never letting the potatoes once out of their grasp. They uto up tho potatoes, and then disappeared over the walls and never returned. The Englishman onco witnessed a pa thetic as well as heroic scene in one of the city squares, in which the sacred monkeys were the actors. IIo saw a number of tnonkcys seated and standing in a large circle, and a female monkey hugging and wailing ovor tho dead body of her baby, that had Just been killed by a cobra's bite. The other females were trying to console her by caresses, while the males appeared to bo in earnest consultation among them selves. In tho center of tho circlo was the largo cohru that had inflicted the fatal bite, coiled and with head erect, watching the enemies by whom ho was surrounded. Suddenly a young nnd nthletio male monkey sprang into the arena. IIo care fully approached tho cobra, which pre pared itself to strike. The monkey muije n few passes, and just as the snake vn nlwut to dart its bend ho sprang to one side, and then ovor tho cobra. This was repeated so often and with such astound ing rapidity that the cobra became bewil dered, when tho monkey seized tho snake by tho neck and proceeded to crush its head to n jelly by rubbing it on tho ground with all its might. Tho snake tried to free Itself by coiling uround tho monkey's neck; but In vain; its struggles became weaker nnd weaker until llfo was extinct. When tho snake's Iread had been reduced to a shapeless mass tho simian hero dropped .ho cobra and executed a scries of hops and somersaults. Up to that moment tho other monkeys had maintained tho most anxious silence, watching ovory movement of the combat outs with eager Interest. Tho snake's death, however, was the signal for the most joyous chatterings nnd gambols. They took hold of tho conqueror of tho snake, patted him on tho head, scratched his buck, danced around him nnd gave every manifestation of their great appre ciation of his valorous achievement. The poor mother carried nbout her dead babe for two days longer. Chicago Tribune. Tho Cure of Hooks. Children should early bo taught care of a book. A very little child can understand that a book must not bo thrown on the floor or torn or bent backward or mal treated In tho flfty small ways in which children nro permitted to abuse books. Such habits in children are duo quite as much to ignorance as cnrolessness on the part of parents. Those who have no inter est or rtlTectlon for books themselves nro not likely to expect It from thiflr children. A reverence for books is part of tho lovo ono bears them, nnd people who havo been brought up iu an atmosphere of books, or who spend much time in reading or study, will naturally handle a book respectfully themselves, and Insist that tholr children shall do likewise. There Is much negligence shown in the matter of returning borrowed books, nud this often by persons of whom one would oxpect bettor things. Por months after a book is read It is allowed to lie about tho house, and no especial effort la made to re turn it to its owner. That a book should bo returned as soon as read, just as partic ularly as ono would return a tool after uslug It or a garment after wearing It, would nppear to go without saying. Yet It Is not always the caso. , And It Is right to insist that our children shall he us exact In this respect; that they shall, aftor borrowing a book, cover it neatly If It lie a nicely bound one, treat it carefully while In their possession and re turn it promptly whon flnlshed. This Is not only simple justico to the owner, but such teaching will go far toward making u child particular about the property of oth ers. Harper's ISazar. l'ur Service ltlflei. An Ingenious Invention has recently ap peared for ouubliug shooting practice to bo uiado with service rifles in many cases where no mugo exists, and where it is ouly possible to II ro with some device of this kind. An ordinary cartridge case Is em ployed to hold a miniature cartridge and bullet tu its mouth, which together occupy tho position of tho service bullet, tho part occupied by tho service charge being filled up by nohamliercoutalulnga piston, which is struck by the regular breech block piston on llrlng, and so carries its blow to tho miniature cartridge. Cartridges with dif ferent charges are made for ranges from 33 to SIX) yards. New York Times. The Ileal Ojuettlou.
