Chicago for many years, and accord
ing to tho returns at midnight
Hempstead Washburn, republican,
is leader in the mayoralty light by a
safo plurality.
Tho democrats had a formidable
split In their ranks by tho Inde
pendent candldaqy of ex-Mayor
Harrison, but tho republicans were
do better otT owing to a citizens'
movement, led by Elmer Wash
burn, Both Harrison and Elmer
Washburn, particularly tho former,
polled a voto amazing to party poli
ticians. Harrison is said to have the
iecret support of a large number of
tho wealthy men of tho city, who
aro backing tho world's fair. Hit
old-tiino strength with tho foreign
speaking populace, especially Ger;
mans and Bohemians, also returned
to blm heavily.
Elmer Washburn's vote, while a
surprise to machine politicians, was
something of a disappointment to

of bloody affrays. Even tho boot

marshal, who supposed he was
drunk. Soon after being lodged iu
jail the man died. The coroner's

McIIale was drowned at Coe, on tho
eastward Hue of tho Oregon Pacific
railroad, Sunday. In company
with two other women she attempted

when siie slipped aud fell in, The
body was carried down by the swift
current, and although rescued with
in half an hour, a mile below tho
sceno of the accident, was fright
fully mangled by contact with tho
rocks. She was a widow, recently
from Miehigau, aud bad taken up

brought to this city last evening.

All experience shows that the force
of law is required to prevent cruelty
hv a certain necoubnro of meu. Of
all forms of brutality practiced In
civilized communities, perhaps none
Is more reprehensible than the mal
treatment of the poor, dumb brutes
which do so much valuable service
for their masters and nro so often re
quited by kicks and blows. A vic
ious temper in the human bruto is
apt to find its expression In ac's of
cruelty to the dumb animal. It is
proposed to form in tills city a soci
ety which shall have for Us object
the prevention of cruelty of this de
scription. It will be organized on
tfio same lines as those upon which
similar associations nrc successfully
working In other cUles. Every
reader will at ouco recall instance
of cruelty to animals which have
come under his own observation and
for which there was no punishment,
no one being especially authorized
to interfere on behalf of the sutler-
lug animals and arrest the cruel pci-
petrators of the outrages. In all (he
large cities there have been organ
ized societies to take up this good
work, the members of which are bj
law empowered to make arrests, and
the very best results havo followed
