Ifcrr Iwcluoeo. Home persons
bare been anxious to learn whether
tbe new city ordinance on Jloen
was so construed a to Include the
who e)l fruit and vegetables abooJ
town as peddlers or hawkers.
While those persons are usually
termed peddlers, yet they would
hardly be classed under that head
in the point or law. To settle the
matter to some who have asked the
question a JuVHXAh reporter Inter
viewed Judge Murphy, who drew
up the ordinance and he said that
such was not the spirit or tbe law.
Tbe reporter also Interviewed dty
Attorney Richardson, and he
thought such a cIbm did not prop
erly come under the head of whnl
are called peddlers. The spirit of
the ordinance was not to Injure any
honest man In carrying on a legltl
tnnte business that disturbed no one,
but this special clause referred to
itinerant peddlers who sell some
shoddy or worthless goods and de
ceive innocent peoplo and take tbe
trade away from our local merchant",,
who make and spend their money
in tiio city, A man who rales fruit
end vegetables should not bu re
strained from selling thesamo any
where in the open market, and the
ordinance was not Intended to pre
vent him from doing so.
Moiik of tjik Convention. The
convention of county ofllcers from
tbe several counties, which was held
In this city yesterday, wus a more
pompous aflulr than wus at first ro
jwrU.il. Not only were the clerks In
convention, but four county treas
urers were holding a conference und
it few sheriffs were also In the city,
devising some plans In which to
facilitate their work, and submit the
same to the legislature for Its consld
c rat Ion. The matter of boarding
prisoners was discussed, In order to
como to an understanding of the
law regulating that matter, as under
the saiiio provision some sherlllH
charge one price and some another.
Precinct tux collecting wus consider
cd an unnecessary expenditure of
time and money, The treasurers
devoted most of the afternoon to
the dlscukslon und preparing of a
bill Increasing the salaries of the
county treasurers. The salaries have
not btvu increased since Oregon
became a slate, though the business
of their ofllevs has increased lu
many cases ten fold. The work of
thoonielols in convention will doubt
less be attended with good results.
