WOMAN'S ROUND TABLE.
Kdlud by Andrea Hofer.
Womitti Is really ths Knlgbt of
the Nineteenth Ceutury. 8liu is
lighting the real battles of to-dny,
with her pen, hor voleo uiul her
loving inlhieiicp.
Hcrnjreof Chivalry litis Just nr
rlvetl. Sho is being ilubbed with
kulghthooil every day anil her
round tublesof council uro growing
more nud more numerous. From
every field of service woman comes
with her reports of work done and
to be done. She is rearing temples
to her cause, and building n power
for good that will ultimately go out
and meet the ilrugou ylutoilously.
It Is Impossible to obtain correct
statistics of the progressive autl
reformatory work of women, but
there Is no condition of life that Is
tiot feeling Its wholesome influence.
The voice of her opinion always
rings clearly on the side of virtue
and right. And the press can do no
greater thing than hold a warm
place In Its heart for her words, her
projects iind her iMug9.
Our "Hound Table" welcomes all
to partake of lis dNeiislou.
Wonmu's life nnd work, whether in
iu the home or in society, whether
for philanthropy or self-support,
will be considered heic. Wo believe
that every woman's life, whether
lived In thoiweet privacy of home
or on the highways, will tell In the
graiid ultimate, if stimulated nud
directed by high thought nnd broad
sympathies.
THE LAHORING WOMAN KKCOG
N1ZEI). The women and men that did the
work are comlug in for their shate
of recognition as well as the capi
talist who poses as exhibitor, lu the
coming World's Fair. And further
more, cougress suggests that the
work of women, whether produced
iu whole or in part by them should
receive special recognition. Only
those women uifted with genius or
special skill can enter nnicles for
competition produced wholly by
themselves, and tiiousamis of wom
en are excluded from any recogni
tion whatever because of the rapid
industrial developement by reason
of the division of labor. The Queen
Isabella association, represennig
woman's interests iu the World's
Columbian exhibition, has taken
hold of this suggestion and will
push it to a completesuccess, having
ent the following suggestions to
the commissioners.
First. Enter no exhibit compet
ing for a reward of merit which is
not accompauled by an affidavit of
the number of women employed iu
Its production.
Second. That eaeli womau em
ployed in producing such exhibits
shall receive u lithographic fac sim
ile of the prize which is awarded
to the exhibitor.
Third. The lady board of man
agers should acquaint themselves
with all the forms of industrs in
which women are engaged, and
should ascertain the proportionate
part which women perform in the
production of all articles entered for
exhibition, for without this know),
edge the duty assigned them by con
gress in Sec. 6 cannot bo compiled
with.
Every producer is entitled to as
much recognition for his or he'
labor as the exhibitor is for his en
terprise, and the World's Columbian
exposition affords the grandest op
portunity to place itself on record as
the first to recognize this great Oct
aud do equal Justice to man and
woman, laborer and capitalist.
HOLIDAY aiFTS.
It taken a certaiu genius to ho a
good gift maker. The indiscrimi
nate buying of a present all around
ispositively indelicate, especially in
commemoration of a sacred time. It
savors of the "give nnd take" order
1 of things to give an Inappropriate
present.
Iu the first place, if Christmas

might as well not be observed. It is
really a harmful time, especially to
the children; if the original sense of
11 Is lo3t, the keen tdgo of their en
joyment is blunted by an overdose
of toys nnd food, leaving them sel
fish and discontented for a long
time after. How little the real
spirit of the day is mixed in with
Its observance, in the homo as well
as outside! The festivities are the
emphatic features and the little child
ton often catches that and only that,
and it is a severe comment upon the
parent thought.
Gifts are beautiful only when they
nrc given with a beautiful thought
behind them. A useless, thought
less present, if It is not wholesale
begging, Is iu the true sense of the
word an insult to the receiver.
Plain Facta in tue Case.
Eh.Jeuhnal: Is It not strange
that men cau bo found to swear to
such apparent falsehoods to screen a
Ureal corporation? The eminent
engineer and bridge builders could
see the souud timbers In tho death
trap that so lately went down, but'
the bents with lotten mudsills menace to the life and property
and lei.ons rotten as dirt was totally 'which' tho railroad company has
invisible from their ImmeiiM, ultJ., pledged Itself to protect and trans
tudc. Perhaps no "competent engl-! port in safety,
neer," would condemn a mudsill There is 110 uncertain sound about
that was so rotten that it could be that verdict, mid, f the evidence

hund;but It looks toaconinioti man
like u very poor support for a CO ton
engine and n train of ptillmaus.
"And there arc more places like that,
in the bridge if the commissioners
will tuko tho pains to look, and
there is at least 0110 win that Is t
rotten that the east halter post is

lie south end, as the others were
from the north, and why It has not
gone down is n wonder to anyone.
without It Is some "eminent engi
neer." Toshow the value of son e
of the evidence Mr. I'runty told a
man there iu my presence, that the
engine had been reversed and ac
counted for the lover being lu the
front notch, by saying that when
ever 1111 engine ran over anything
the shock wnuld throw the revers
ing lever over into the front notch,
by bonding the connecting rod.
We found no bend iu the con
necting bars, which was about one
inch by three in a steel or Iron autl
not very easily bent, and by com
paring the other pans of the revers
ing gear with a locomotive then on
the track, we found the engine hail
not been reversed but the railroad
theory requires that the engineer
should have seen that a rait was
gone put 011 the steam and (oversell.
(If there was no steam on, the re
versing does no good.) Now every
thim: goes toshow that the engineer
had shut nearly all the steam oil
applied the brakes, and never had
any thought of danger until the
crash came. Another theory that
has not been spoken of in the pub
lished accounts. There are two or
more men that saw that east rail
that ended under the tracks, before
the fishplates were taken away, and
they say the broken pieces weie
there the same as the rest of the
rails, at about lltoO or 112 o'clock, but
about daylight they mysteriously
disappeared aud round ones were
found hy Mr. Johiifon that were
quite rusty and showed uo signs of
grease drip or wear on the bolt-holes.
As one of the rail rod men told me,
it is a case of "bread and butter"
and it wont do to say much about
what they know. And another
thing, in regard to that whistle
being souuded. The whistle was
sounded hut it was a short, sharp
blast aud was made during the
craslitng of the timbers anu was
probably made oy something strik
iug tli connecting piece between
the cab and dome, or, maybe the
engineer did pull the whistle as it is
very eloe to his usual whistling
place, but it was instantly cut
short by the crash.
This cm be substantiated by
three or four disimcre&ied men
and among thein.
