Keeping Apples.
N. J. Shepherd uives the Kansas
Farmer the following hints that
may t of use to fruit grewers: "It
is well to know that losses resulting
from carelessness or waut of knowl
edge In sorting aud packing fruit
are very large. Whatever, therefore,
tends to increase knowledge and
warn against curolessntsa will be
found useful.
"One very .essential Item in the
keeping of apples through, the w la
ter is the hauling while picking und
sorting away. A good two-bushel
suck is one of the most convenient
arruugemeuts for picking off the
trees. A light but strong ladder of
sufficient length to reach well up in
to the tree will also be found very
convenient.
"I be best lime to sort fruit is
when it Is picked, and care should
be taken to take out any thut may
have rotten spots or thut are bruised
In uny way, especially from those
that ure intended for long keeping.
A gaod plan is to pile the upples on
straw spread under the shed or
open where there is a good circula
tion of air. This will allow them a
good opportunity to go through the
sweat and they will keep much bet
ter than if they are put directly in
cellur or pits where they are to re
maiu all winter. If they can tie
spread out thinly over the ground
they will dry out much more rapidly
than if put in heaps. Good boxes or
bins that are set three or fouriuches
from tba wall and the same distance
from the bottom of the cellur will bv
better than to put on the ground and
uguiust the sides.
