The wire Is a good, big cop per one, weighing 170 pounds to the mill', so that it will carry the voice in llrst-clas shape. The line will furnish communication with all the towns between Portland aud Salem, aud it will be ready for business in about five weeks. It will bo furn ished with the improved long-distance telephones, through which a conversation iu be carried on be tween Sulem and Portland as well r.s between different parts of this city by the style in use here. Persons in Portland and Salem who have telephones in their houses can connect wit li the long-distance telephone and converse with eacli other. Persons who have no tele phone will be called to the public telephone by a messenger. There are signs of progress and improvement on every hand in the telephone business. The Portlan Telephone company is running hundred-wire cables from the cen tral office in all directions to con nect with its various system. There will be about ten of these cables, which will take the place of about 7.')0 wires now connecting with the central olllce.
