They say he made an impreasion up on the leidersof the democracy in that state, and that he now has hosts of friends among people win hitherto had known him only b name. General Sickles and General H. It. Soierare credited with hav ing done a great deal of Mission aryworkiu Hill's behalf althoul) there Is soniethinc of an impresinii that it was hardly the part of wis dom for the one-armed soldier t avail himself of his many opportu nities as lie did to speak in detrae lion of Grover Cleveland. To near ly everyone with whom he came it contact Sickles managed to conve his opinion that the ex-presidem had no further show for anothei nomination, "that he hud cut tin friendship of old line democrat. like Hendricks, that he had trainer entirely with the mugwump crowd, that he was not a man who stood b his friends like Hill, and that as a consequence he could not be relied upon to hold the democratic party together." There are astute politicians hero who are just as interested in the political fortunes of Governor Hill as Governor Sickles himself, who hold to the opiuiou, and make no bones of ex pressing it, that the necessity ha.-, uot yet arisen for denouncing Cleve land in order to make friends for Hill. It is altogether too early, they say, to enter on a campaign of slan der and abuse, and as a matter of fact they do not believe that either feature should enter into a contest oetweeu tne leaders nt tno fame party. In their opinion it (i quite sufilcient to n-e such ammunition against their political oppom nts. From this time on Governor Hill will have a secret bureau in Indian apolis in charge of experienced pol iticians who will sec to it that his praises are continuously sounded by newspaper correspondents, platform speakers and street corner gossi- crs. Ex-Governor Grey will have' more or less supervision of this piece j of machinery, and that being the case can be depended upon that for; every word said favorable to Hill, two will be said inimical to Clove laud. A similar connection already exists in Denver with Jno. Atkins of the News ns chief supervisor and the latter is leaving no stone un turned to create a sentiment west gifts, by systematic, practical and intelligent training. NO DKCIvINES. .o honest property has declined a penny in Western Oregon, through what is known as the dull season of July and August, when so many of the well-to-do people of the Pacific Coast suspend work and go to the- seaside. Prices have not yielded a particle, but so far as placed on the market it assumes a firm and rigid valuation, that has never been known to decrease, but for five years has steadily ad vanced, until now prices are far beyond the anticipations of the most sanguine citizen a few years ago. DID YOU EVER THINK OF ACT? Ol Une general fact is always very potential with thinking men and women, because it is made up of a multitude of other facts all tending one way. That tendency has all been to advances in Salem real estate. Several hundred sales in the past few months all showing sharp advances constitute the general fact of all-around rise in valuations. Even for a month and approach it from any direction, upon your return you will express surprise and the conviction will be forced upon your mind that ''she grows." When a city has the room to grow in that Salem has, and is spreading out into the surrounding prairies, but one thing will result a great city. Americans love to build a city on a sightly place. On a beautiful river, with natural forest, it is no wonder our city spreads out like anothei Philadelphia. You need not go to Puget Sound cities to see streets lead out through native forests. That can eb seen right here in Salem, where miles of ave neus and streets have been graded this year through natural thickets of evergreens. Whatever doubts anyone may have about any Pacific coast real estate, it does not attach to ii!vttments in Salem property. That is certain. You can place money here with a certain assurance of rise. Not a piwv ..l propeity in Salem held five years that has not advanced one to five lmudred per cent. It will do better in the w:t year than it has in the past.
