I ratting Children to lied.
The mother who puts the timid
child to bed, and takes awhy tli
light, and goes down stairs, aud ,
leaves him to his conjuring, careless i
and indifferent and disbelieving, or!
bent on overcoming the mischief ,
.forcibly, Is destroying something,
that one would think ofsmall worth
to her uot only his nervous liber,
but his love of herself; and the day
will come whew fate will Imve its
revenge on her in his own iudiflVr
ence to her, and she will reeognisse
it, even if he behave in all outward
respects" like a dutiful son. It is her
part to examine Hit matter, to reason
with the child, to comfort bin:, to
see how far it is possible wlthjiim to
btibdue the fear. II she cannot slay
with iiim herself, she can at lest
leave the door open so that he may
hear the cheerful down-stairs voices,
the hum of life, not to be shut into
his tomb, as the unformulated
thought of his desperate little mind
make-it;shecan leavealampon the
hearth, aud so let there be some light
to di-pel his fancies and to keep back
the dark and its uiishaped visions.
She may regard it as tiilling, but to
him it is tremendeus: and if lie Is
wise either in mother love or human
kindness she will not lot the imagi
native and sensitive child stiller
more than it must, remembering
that that tempeinment, if it lias
more to enjoy through life than oth
ers, has also much, much more to
stiller.
When a few night have failed to
bring calm to tho little being out of
the experience, and tho last going to
bed alone is as bad as the first, and
all threats have only made the mat
ter worc, and nil reasoning has pro
duced no good result; when ho has
tried to conquer, and the effort has
left him trembling as violently as if
he has an ague then It is something
not to be overcome by harsh or
rough or peremptory measuies, and
the mother should see to it that this
child has some active physical exer-ci-rf
ju-t before going to bid lliat
will make his'littlc bod, glad of
ltfst, and she would best lie down be
side him, or find some work that she
can do upstairs till ho falls asleep, In
order to aflord him the comfort of
companionship and tho sense of her
embracing love, and soothe his irri
table nerves to icpo-o instead of rous
ing them to action. These nerves
would never have been irritable
if -he had not insisted on her
owu way two long in the be
ginning, It she had given them no
chance to get on lire, and then goon
exciting themselves, n sue nan put
the child to lied alone from the very
outset of his career, so that it wits
tlie natural older of things to him,
aud he Had had the habit established
of quiet sleep and nbseenco of fear
from the first, In ninety-nine c.i-'-out
of a bundled there would necr
have been any trouble of the soil.
But if thiough any idiosyncrasy of
the child, or any renil'siiepH of her
owu, the fear has come upon him,
she will never in all the years re
maining havogieator love outpoured
upon her than thai child will jjive
