Mr. Angcll wishes to give away
thousands of copies of this book,
lie would like to put it into every
home, every workshop, and every
school in this country, and lie would
like to make a free gift of it to every
man and b y in the universe.
Through the kindnessand generosity
of -Mrs. William Anpleton, he is au
thorized to preen t a copy to sixteen
hundred lioston drivers.
We have received a copy of " The
Uncle Tom's Cabin of the IIorc,"u
cheap edition of Miss Anna SewellV
delightful book, familiar to some
lovers of hordes in this country as
"Mack Heauty." We cannot think
of another work on the horse a wide
diffusion of which would be so u.-c-
f ill, since Miss.Sewell's book, besides
its good sense, right feeling, and
sound doctriueas to the proper treat
ment of horses, poasc-es the one in
dispensable quality of readableness.
It will delight refined persons, and
the simp'e can understand it.
It is a b ok that sh mid be read in
all our public schools. It would
teach boys and girls both humane
and intelligent methods of treating
man's best friend the horse.
No rich man o." womiii who loves
a horse can possibly do a greater
kindness to these faithful dumb
servant-', companions and friends of
ours than to follow the example of
Mrs. Win. Appleton, of Boston, by
ordering a stiillcient number, at a
cost of twelve cents each, to give

DniUQUU, June 12. The Luther
an Synod In session in tills city
adopted unanimously a long series
of resolutions touching their atti
tude on the public school -question
and compulsory cducttion. They
refer to legislation of recent date In
several states and say in part: We
the society girls consists of shirts,
collars, scarfs nnd waistcoats precise
ly of the same sort us worn by the
men. For theatre wear at night a
black waistcoat with three buttons,
displaying the lurgest posible ex
panse of snowy shirt bosom, is worn,
and the high collar and white bow
are an exoct reflection of the gleam
ing and starchy articles that have so
long formed the mainstay of full
dressed masculinity. An old broker,
wiio seldc m notices how his pretty
daughters dress, chancedtobeat the
theatre on a recent night with an
old club crony, nnd, looking about
the house, he caught sight of his two
girls In a box party. They both
wore the masculine get-up and
the broker strained his eyes
to make out what it all
meant. He fumbled in his pocket

he hastily jammed into the opera- Court otreet,
glass machine in front of him.
Securing the glass, he leveled it,
with a great exhibition of agitation,
upon the box wherein his daughters
sat, and gazed long and hard. Then
turning to his companion, he beg
ged him to look and tell hi in what
his girls had on. The other old
fellow peered through the glase3
and sa'd: "It's th it devilish odd 1
dress reform business, Charlie. They ;
are trying to get all the girls up
like men now, you know, and yours
have caught the fever."
The broker took a card from ins
pocket and scribbled something on
1 the back. Summoning an usher.
he directed him to hand it to ids
daughters in the box. It said:
"Stand up and let me pee if ym

The girls received the card and
read it. Then looking about the
house they caught their father's
