AFTER THE MORMONS.
Senator Edmunds Introduced a
bill iu the senate providing that all
funds or other propcity lately Lc
lougiug toorlupo'cisiouorclalnied
by the Corporation of the Church of
Jesus C.irist Latter Day Saints shall
be devoted to the benefit of the pub
lic common schools iu Utah.
THE SILVER V LL.
Mr. Wilson, of Washington, said
tc-clay mat the bill was not as
whole just what ho would have de
sired, a ho voted iu caucus to striko
out the bullion redemption clause;
this was defeated aud the bill as it
passed was adopted by tho caucus.
It will doubtless be amended in tho
senate by changes which will be ad
vantageous to tho West.
Senator Jones, of Nevada, was nak
ed how he liked tho silver bill pass
ed by tho liou&o Saturday, when ho
replied as follews: "You mean how
do I dislike it," laughed the senator.
"Well, it is by no means what wo
wanted and what tho western peo
ple demand. II simply, makes n
commoJity of silver bullion. We
wantal silver colua0e, and this is
what we got fVoni tho liou'-e. When
tho bill comes over to tho senate
side we w ill p. ssa free coinage bill or
nothing. Wo will not favor any
compromise nie.isut. in a comer
houses on the j
ence bciwcen both
m ttor I am hopeful that tho house
will accede to the demand of tho
counlry for silver coluage. Wo will
imprcs" upon them very forcibly the
fict that If we are to have any
silver legislation at all this session
it must bo tometbing very ueaily
npproachius free .oiua0e of silver."
"Wlift- would bo theefi'ectof tho
enactment of the so-called Windom
bill into a law?" "Why, It simply
provides for" the storage of silver
bullion aud the issuance of ceitifi
cats thereon, without biinging ad
ditional metallic money into circu
lation. Some say that it is better
than no bill atall, but I am inclined
to believe that matters would be as
well or better under the pre-entlaw
oa this subject."
