It is not good for the state, nor
cveu for the party In power, to have
too large a majority in a legislature.
The republican party in Oregon
would be. better oil" to-day, more
united and more worthy, etc. East
Oregonian.
We nresurprlecd to read the above
in the leading democratic paper of
the state. II is a confession that the
democratic dumaud for the control
of the state is founded on the love
of dominion, rather than tho devo
tion of the party to some sound prin
ciple, that is to be for the saving of
the nation.
It is equivalent to saying that the
republican party is all right, but it
should not be too stro g. Repub
licans are all right but there
should not bo too many of them.
The party would 1k bettor oil If it
were less able to keep its
promises. It would be more worthy
if fewer people considered it worthy
of its confidence, etc.
This Is all political bunkum. If
the republican partj is right it can
not be too strong. If the democra
tic party is wrong It cat) not be too
weak. We say there is no middle
ground along this line of argument.
To say that a party is all right, only
the people give it too many votes, Is
an un-utueneaii baby-act In politics.
It is saying, I am willing to be licked,
I but don't lick me too hard.
The truth is the above sentiment
' does not find lodgment in tho aver
age democratic breast, as It cannot
II ml a place in any logical mind.
While it Is true, that If a party
grows too largo it is liable to fac
tious, yet If there is any cardinal dif
ferences between the two parties it
cannot be expressed too emphati
cally at tho polls.

This is one of the most worthy
nominations on the republican state
ticket of Oregon. It Is a recogni
tion for an Important office of a gal
lant Oermau-Amerlcaii oitUeu, and
It will be a credit and an honor to
the German Americans all over tho
world to have such a flue represen
tative of their race in the Uultcd
States to bo treasurer of tho stnto of
Oregon. I twill also be a credit to
the republican party and stamp it in
the eyes of tho people as a party
that is liberal in its views toward
the best class of foreign citizens,
who come here in an early day,
helped subdue the wllderneas nud
furnished thousands of bravo men
In the war for tho preservation of
tho union. And of all this largo
element of citizenship there is no
more noble or truly American typo
than Hon. Phil. Metschan, of
Grant county.
Thk Journal has taken pains to
! write letters to the neighbors of Mr.
I Metschan and ihey, regardless of
I party, say that lie Is in every way
worthy and fully competent to fill
the responsible Ksitloii to which
the republican party has nominated
him as its standard bearer. When
tho votes are counted It will be
seen that Phil. Metschan has not
fallen behind any man on the
ticket lu the race.
He came to Grant county nt a
very early period and has had the
I confidence of the people there at all
I times. They liuvo repeatedly elect
ed him county Judg and ho has
now been for years county
elerk and Is filling that office nt
present. Ho Is n competent man
nud understands state finances
form tho ground up. He knows
where tho money of the people
comes from and where It should go
to. There will be no defalcations
in his olfiec. No one will be able to
say that ho made a dollar wrong
fully or took a dollar that did not
belong to him, If we are able to go
by what his neighbor say of him.
Phil Metschan Is an honest, honor
able, whole-souled gentleman In
I every senso of the word.
The universal verdict about him is
j that the longer and moro intimately
he Is known, the better ho Is liked.
j He is a staunch republican and yet
, he will get about tho whole vote of
Grant county. He wl'.l get nn Im
mense vole In Portland, Ho will
1 get a large vote all over the state
otilside his own party. He will get

THO GOOD OF HEREDITY.
A writer in llnrpcr's Bazar for
May 24 discusses heredity under an
able edltornl review, entitled, "Kis
met" and shows up tho dangerous
Hue of fatalism that runs through
the doctrine. It has its dark side,
but theto is also u brighter sldo nud
one wherein heredity forms one of
the most impregnable arguments
for Christianity.
It is not denied thnt religious cul
ture leaves its influence upon the
character. It is doubtful if any
other kind of teaching or philosophy
is so far-reaching In Its cllcct on the
human mind and character as
Christianity. Other systcnisof moral
philosophy and even of spiritual
culture nre good for tho day and for
the person, but leave not much Im
press on tho character of succeeding
generations.
Not so with Christianity. Even
the uijnostlo nud infidel will admit
the great value of the cardinal
christian virtues; will not deny but
that he Is a better and a stronger
muti for having had a christian
father and mother. Bob Ingersoll
himself came from a preacher's fam
ily, nud his brain Is stronger nud
his heart warmer than If he had re
ceived none of tho benefits of chris
tian culture operating In tho forma
tion of the character, which ho has
inherited so largely from a christian
father nud mother. The christian
religion is tho only system, looked
upon merely from the standpoint of
moral culture and ethical training,
that goes beyond the present gener
ation and makes for good men nud
women, far into the. coming gener
ations. If all the services of the churohes
were stopped to-day, and every
religious institution In the world
wiped out, the influence of christian
culture upon human character
would go on for many generations,
giving tho world good men and
women.
The argument of heredity In its
ellects on character becomes nn in
vincible one to the scoptlc. If he
admits for a moment that he is one
whit the belter man because his
parents were faithful, conscientious,
christian believers, it logically fol
lows t hut he Is trying to withhold
from those who come after him the
advantages of a christian culture
that he Is enjoying the benefits of,
iu that his ctiareotor Is stronger to
to resist evil, becausu of the Inherit
ed qualities, that wertv the product
of chrlstlau culture.
