nRETIIRllN OXLY TO SOME EXTEXT.
A Full Explanation to be Made
at 2 O'clock p. in. this
Afternoon.
AMiA.vv, Or., May 5. The city is
till highly agitated over the events
oiicerning the unfortunate church
nirair. The public is becoming
more and more Interested. Every
body acknowledge5) that it te not
:in aflair of small Interest.
GOOD WIIJ,.
The members of conference and
the Bowmanltes meet and greet
eacli other as brethren and it is
evident deep wounds have been
made on both sides. Of course the
Imt-headedness of some prevent
them from being truly friendly.
The ex-bishop when told by one of
his opponents "that wc are brethren
still" answered with emphasis,
"only to some extent." Because
men think that he is not a bishop
auv more they aie his brethren
".inly to some extent."
KAI.SK t'LAIM-.
Il is remarkable how dl fibre nt the
Uowmanites act now in conparison
with their actions before the organi
zation of conference. They tell all
around that thcie was no danger at
all in the direction of which the
aiiti-Bowmanites speak now. They
would even misrepresent tacts
They claim that the conference (as
it was) Is nearly equally divided "'id
send out such statements. To make
the public and their friends believe
that live to eleven is "nearly equally
divided" is just one more of the
many misrepresentations that have
been used all along in this church
controversy.
"BISHOP UOWJIAN &WOIJK."
The "bay" of the town leports
all around that Bishop Bowman
swore. When susneniug J. Bo wer
sox, he exclaimed with vehement
gesture and oratorio power "lu the
name of the Lord Jesus Christ I
suspend you." Bowman, no doubt
thinks that this was not taking ihe
name of the Lord In vain.
WILL EXPLAIN.
This afternoon at 2 p. m., Bow
man will give a history of the dif
ficulty. This will no doubt neces
sitate the conference to give its side
of the situation, it is a pity that
not every member of the Evangeli
cal church knows all about this long
continued agitation that has been
destroying the peace and harmony
of this church for some years.
SUNDAY SMtVlCKh.
W. C. Kautuer, president of La
fayette seminary, preached to a
large and interested congregation at
theM. E. church South. Though
we may be forsaken by the "bishop,"
it was evident that the Lord was
still witli us.
J. Bowersox preached the ordina-,
tlou sermon at 3:30 p. in. J. M.
Heauchamp, H. L. Pratt, and W.
L. Beaumont were ordained elders,
The missionary meeting in the
evening was addressed by J. M.
Dick, W. C. Kautner and J. Bower
sox. Iu a short time about ?200
were secured for the missionary
cause.
The work of conference will hard
ly bo completed before Tuesday even
ing. Everything is being dene very
cautiously.
TheBowmanites have elected H.I.
Bittner presiding elder of the entire
conference. Their would-be confer
ence is doitig very little official
work.

Congressman Hermann in an in

silver bill says:
"I feel myself in accoid with the
platform recently adopted by the re-'
publican slate convention of Oregon,
which declared "in favor of the free
and unlimited coinage of silver, and
denounce any attempt to discrimi
nate against silver as unwise and
unjust." Our people of the Wit
demand the lenionetuation
of silver. They think it
has been unjustly, unnecessarily,
injudiciously and too long demon
