SERIOUS CRIMES AT BUTTEVILLE."
K Saloon ynrglaflied and an Outrage
Committed bjtwo YpnnR Men
One.noivth Jail.
Last Friday night two young men
of tho Uultevllle neighborhood filled
up on tho products of a distillery
which exists down there and be
came reckless. They went Into tho
town and kicked open tho door of
E. P. Bents' saloon, broke Into a
lK)xofeaudwichcs,a box ot crackers
and helped themselves generally to
tho stock of the saloon.
Their naricB are Jack Ilitchie,
aged about twenty-four years, ami
Dolph Gouche, aged about twenty
six years. They tool; their plunder
to tho baru of Geo. Li llocque, for
whom Gouche was working, and
stored It there, feasting to their full
satiety during the night.
But this Is not their worst crime.
Crazed by the material they had
imbibed, they found three littleglrls
ranging in age from four to two
years, daughters of Mi. Gcfilet, a
guest at Mr. La Jlocque's; they en
ticed them to th burn, a distance
from thu houso and committed the
foulest crime to which a brutal dis
position can stoop.
Art soon as the terrible news was
circulated, indignation ran very
high. Sheriff Croiwui was notified
by telegraph, but wat in (iervals at-
tuiidliiL' a law suit ai.d could not
reach Butteville until yesterday
morning. In the meantime ltitcliio
had been placed under arrest awd
wuh lakcn before W. H. Hurst, Ksq.,
JusMco of the peace at Aurora on a
charge of burglary, where ho waived
examination and was committed to
tho county Jail fo await the action
of the grand jury, and va brought
up last night for safe keeping.
Dolph Gouche succeed in eluding
Ills pursuer, but Hlicrlll Crolsau is
after him and IiIh escape is con
sidered Impossible. He lias been a
fisherman and bout puller on the
Columbia river, and it is thought
be started for there, but the tele
graph has been used to good ad
vantage and tho likelihood Is that
he will bo safely landed to-day or
to-morrow.
Il is more- than probable that
Judge Lynch would have exercised
full authority were It not for tho
coolness and good judgment of somo
of Bulteville's buslnesH men, who
desired to sec tho law properly vin
dicated. Tlio mother of the outraged chil
dren, who is plucky and fearless,
though modest and virtuous, would
have made short work of tho vil
lains if she could have found them
after hIhj was Informed of their ter
rible crime, but they hid themselves
In a convenient place and sho could
not discover thorn. There will be
littlo sympathy for them when they
receive tho penalty they deserve.

The Bkj Debate. Tho Alka
Hespcriausand Pbllodorians met in
battle nrray in the university chapel
Saturday night to Bee who should bo
declared the ablest debaters, over
the knotty problem of nationalism
us presented by the ptutement in
volved In "ItcBolvcd that national
ism as portrayed In Bellamy's
'Looking Backward' Is to be de
sired." The Phils took the lead for
tho anirmatlve, Mr. Fitzgerald
speaking. IIo stated the claims
made for nationalism and showed
how strikes and starvation would
dlsuppeur if Bellamy's theories be
came realities, napoleon Jjavis
delivered a volley of arguments In
return for the negative, arguing that
the Bellamy business was nothing
new, It having been tried by such
venerable Individuals us Lycur
gus, and oilier back humbers, and
that it would destroy all incentives
to individual excellence. Mr. Wil
liams took it up again for tho stu
dents and portrayed the slavery of
labor to capital in the present day,
and dilated upon tho glorious eman
cipation of four iiulllou slaves and
that tho Be'lamy plan would
make all men eqiml lu tlio Hame'
way. Mr. Williams was a polished
speaker. The next man to ex postu
late was Mr. Crandull, who aim
wered tho preceding speaker, and
asserted that instead of only tour
million slave-), individual freedom
would be utterly destroyed; ho fur
ther asserted that two-thirds would
be continually idle, as the nation
would be able to guarantee every
man the gratification of his wishes.
Mr. Hounds followed for tho affirm
ative declaiming against the
money-power as it now exists.
Under the Bellamy system there
would be no money, uud no monop
olies would be possible, all Incentive
to crime would be ubolihed. Mr.
Brown opposed with uii argument
to show that by nationalism all fam
ily life would be destroyed. Eacli
individual upon birth became the
ward of tho state. Mr. Collins in
troduced quotations from political
economists to show that competition
us now conducted was tho foo of en
terprise; while one succeeded the
m,i ny were driven to tho wall and
destroyed. Mr. Vandersoll resumed
tho negative, and showed that tho
Bellamy theory was Inconsistent, as
it asked no title to success in life,
and that doing and not being was
tho only title to an existence. Mr.
Allshio sustained tho afllrmatlve,
assailing the prescut system: the
lovo of money and pursuit of prop
erty, wew tho root of all evil. At
torney Carson took advuntago of a
statement by Bollamy that humau
nature remained tho same In all
ages, and said that tho proposed
Hyrtem would not ouango this.
Hev. Thomas applied his theo
logical hand I u an effective manner,
reading press notices favoring Bel
lamy. Mr. Starr succeeded in dem
onstrating several clinching and
concise argument. The conclud
ing speeches were now made by
Messrs Davis and Fitzgerald. The
Judges, Messrs. Corwin, Jeffries und
Burnett rendered a decision for the
tiegativoand were unanimously for
that sldo of tho debute. About 300
people wcro prescut, und felt a great
interest in this dry subject. Mr,
htryker,presldent of the Plillo's, pre
sided. ArramreuiontH have been perfected
for the completion of the seaside
division of tho Astoria and South
