Valentine's Day. The 14th of
February Is, or more correctly was,
celebrated in England, Scotland
and different parts of the continent,

Inst custom. On the eve of St. Val
entine a number of young folks
maids and bachelors would assem
ble together and inscribe upon little
billets the names of the equal num
ber of the maids and bachelors of
their acquaintance, throw the
whole Into a receptacle of some sort,
and thvn draw them Iottcry-wlse
care, of course being taken, that
each should draw one of the oppo
site sex. The pereon thus drawn
becomes one's valentine. But it is
fur more probable the custom of
chomlng valentines is a relic of that
nature religion which was undoubt
edly the primitive form of religion
lu North-western Europe as else
where; and that it sprang from a
recognition of the peculiarity of the
season. Hence, the explanation,
that, "about this time of the year,
the birds choose their mates, and
thence, probably came the custom
of the young men and maidens
choosingvalenlines or special loving
friends on that day." Valentines
are not lews extensively manufact
ured than formerly. The newspa
pers do not full to record that the
post-men delivered so many more
hundred letters on that day than
they do in general.
Xews From an Old Salemite.
While C'has. Helleubrand was in
Astoria he met Frank ttuley, who
formerly resided in Salem and for a
time was on the police force. Frank
now owns 100 acres of land n short
distance back of Astoria and has
struck a coal lead ou it that he
thinks will yield him a fortune. It
isu lino quality of stone coal and the
vein discovered Is four feet thick.
He hits had samples sent east and
a largo iron smelting works pro
nounce it superior to any coal for
their use yet discovered, and say
that If a sufficient quantity is found
they will establish a branch busi
ness on the coast where it will be
accessible for the use of this coal.
Mr. Bulcy will fully Investigate and
explore his new coal field over
which he is sanguine of success.
Charlie brought back with him a
sample of the find.
A Bold Imposter. Itev. Wm.
Itollhis, of the M. E- church, In
forms a Journal reporter, that a
few days ago he was lu receipt of a
letter from the pastor of the Meth
dlst church of Sidney, Neb., asking
him to look upon the church books
aud see if he could find tho name of
one B. Benton, saying that such a
man was confined lu prison there
and claimed to bo a member of the
M. E. church of Salem, Or. Rev.
Rollins did as requested but a search
upon the records for 30 years back
failed to reveal any such person. It
Is now supposed that ho is none
other than the man who was men
tioned in Tuesday's dally as B.
Simpson, and who created consider
able excitement over his mode of
tryiug to work forged checks.
The Motor AVhist Club. This
club met lust evening at the resi
dence of Mr.T. McF. Pattou. A new
feature of choosing partners was in
troduced, by the reading of many
amusing conundrums. If space
permitted we might publish them.
The uiiiiinemcnt and Interest in the
game continued until 10 o'clock,
when a splendid lunch was served,
and while enjoying it, a half hour
was pasted lu pleasant conversation
and witty repartee. About 10:30 all
started for their homes, wishing the

The following witnesses have been
called and examined before the
Marion county grand Jury as to the
truth of the charges against the
management of the state asylum for
the Insane, which have been pnb
lishcd In the Jeurnal:
Martin Rowley, hardware mer
chant and ex-supervisor nt the asy
lum. Jesse Macy, proprietor of livery
stable, aud fonuerly pecond cook at
the asylum.
M. Qulnn, at presentnn attendant
at the asylum.
J. A. Davis, attendant at the asy
lum up to last July.
T. P. Burt, ex-employe in base
ment. editorial comment.
The Journal seems to be alone
in printing the news about the
pending investigation of the
asylum. The list of witnesses
sworn by the grand jury and the
time taken to examine them indi
cates that this body of men who
represent the state and the people
are doing their duty in a (thorough
maimer. They will be upheld by
the people in a fearless discharge of
their duty. A complete vindication
of Dr. Lane is hardly to be expected
but if he is entirely exonerated in
the matter charged none will be
more ready to do him Justice tb.au
the Journal. But the interest of
the people, the honor of the
state and the welfare of the un
fortunate ones who are sent hero to
be treated stands above any personal
considerations. Mere love of sen
sation would never tempt us to
print a line of thit unpleasant affair.
The Journal will publish all ob
tainable news about the matter.
Citizens Call ox County
Court.- To-day quite a large num
ber of the citizens of Salem called
on the county commissioners at the
court house, to ascertain iu how far
the county would feel able and
authorized to assist in rebuilding a
bridge at Salem over the Willamette.
The object of tho meeting of the!
commloners was to ascertain the
loss in bridges to the county by the
late flood, and to UikT steps tor re-j
building the same. The citizens
here propose that If the county will '

effort will be made to secure an elec
tion here for the voting of the re
maining $20,000 bonds authorized by
the act of the legislative assembly.
We feel that Salem, if taxed, as she
will be to rebuild tho bridges iu
other parts of the county, ought to
be assisted by tho county iu the
bridge here, aud that as Salem pays
one-third of the taxes in the couuty,
she ought In justice to receive
generous consideration at the
hands of the couuty court, and more
especially as Salem has for 123 years
or more been paying for bridges all
over the county, and receiving
scarcely a dollar in return.
