after smelling of it floated alongside, meas
uring exactly its longth. As to his ago that
is not positively known, but tho barna

crusty as to repel a rifle-ball with tho same

Yes, Joo is tho largest shark known to us
seafaring men. Wo havo tried to kill tho
monster by all possible means, but so far

addition to tho many carpot-layers who fill
their mouths with tacks whilo at work, and
now and then slip ono down their throat by
accident, thero aro throe colored men on
Lombard street who aro able and willing to
startlo a spectator by swallowing a handful
of sharp-pointed iron tacks with tho great
est nonchalance, as if thoy wero tho most
nutritious morsels. Theso men have
neither leathern intestines or copper-lined
stomachs, but the' aro ablo to take caro of
a prodigious quantity of carpot tacks with
out any apparent discomfort or ill-effect.
Medical authorities assert that there is
far less risk attendant upon swallowing a
tack than is generally supposed, and that
Buch a performance is sometimes product
ive of beneficial results. Tho freak who
swallows a single tack or a handful of them
is seized with on abnormal desiro for food,
and it is to this fact that tho harmless ucss
of tho swallowing of tacks is ascribed.
Curiously, tho tacks invariably pass through
tho Btomach with their heads "bowed down
in reverence" and placed in tho center of
tho food so that they do not touch the walls
of the intestines. Even when tho points of
tho tacks penetrate tho lining of tho Btom
ach the result is not so dangerous as would
bo supposed.
Tho reason was oxplalnrd inavory simple
manner by Dr. T. S. K. Morton, who said:
"Theso tack swallo wors generally havo very
strong stomachs and tho amount of gastric

sick persons as a tonic. Really thero is a
certain amount of benefit attached to tho

person who had been compelled to go to a
hospital from such causes, however.
"But I remember tho caso of a horso that
swallowed a largo-sized tack. After his
death wo cut open his stomach. Wo found
thero a solidified mass of a stony nature.
When this hard substance was split open wo
found that tho tack constituted its nucleus.
A similar effect would tako place in a per
son's stomach if tho tack should happen to
stick for any length of timo in tho walls of
tho Intestines."
