A Rank Failure.
Tho great rotary snow plough
which was expected to clear the
line to Spokane Falls at the rate of
ten miles an hour without half try
ing, got in last Saturday night and
was received with loud cheers by an
anxious crowd of snow-bound trav
elers. The machine, however, has
proved to be no good. During the
last week it has screwed Us way U
Latah, where the road ends In n
huge snow drift, and can go no fur
ther. The snow has packed and
frozen until It is almost us solid ns
earth, and the knives have no effect
upon It. The plough now spends
about two-thirds of the time going
and returning from the repair shops.
The only way to open tfie road now
before warm weather, Is to put on n
big force of men and shovel it out.

Tuesday afternoon a 14-year-old
indnimod James Percy, n son of
Mr. Percy, of the upcr JJoIso valley,
was out in the hills about twelve
miles above the city on horseback
and In search of some deer which a
party of hunters from the city had
killed. A man named Silas Saudlln
was with the lad, but the two sepa
rated in the hills, after which
Percy's horeo threw him and ran
ofT. Percy lay on the ground some
time, stunned by the full and being
unable to make his way home, re
mained where he was until relief
came In the person of Mrs. Olive
.Call, who, being at home alone
and hearing of the accident, started
on horseback at 10 o'clock at night
In search of him. She found the
poor boy in tho condition described,
and took him to her house several
miles distant. On reaching home
It was found that Percy had both
feetsobadlyfrozen that his physi
cian says uinputation may be neces
sary. The net of Mrs. Call in going
alone to the rescue of the unfortii-
nato lad lit the hour named, and
through the eold, was that of u
genuine western heroine, nnd it will
be iiflectlonately remembered to Iht
