desire to be Mr. Miller's opponent,
not particularly for glory, hut solely

ened defeat.

had agreed to keep shady until our

I now do, a bid for the republican

est effort of my life that I huvo sum
moned sufficient courage to make

vinced that the success of our party

ler's defeat, demands tho nomina

tho water bill cannot bo assullcd by

lency, the governor, should oppose
Colonel Miller in preference to tiio

our next congressional campaign.

tho character of our foreign im
migration la becoming such as to du

Georgia, which has about tho same
representation iu congress as Iowa,
has so far succeeded In suppressing
her popular vote that her election

people of Oregon want, yea, demand,

is sultry and oppressive. Tho heat of. tho
sun seems more penetrating than usual. II

noto a lack ot its usual transparency.
Small lnky-looldng clouds will bo saon hav
ing an Indistinct and ragged outlino Tno
rlouds will incrcaso in volumo. Small ones
will unite, forming larger bodies, and theso
will rapidly grow in donsity and overcast
tho sky. Tho heavy cloud masses will bo
seen to approach nearer tho earth. Occa
sionally somo section of tho cloud mass will
bo Illuminated by lightning, and after an in
terval of twenty or thirty seconds a faint
rumbling tbundor will bocome audible. As
tho storm develops and draws nearer tho
intervals between tho flashes ot lightning
and reports of thundcr'will shorten, until,
when tho storm is at its height, many flashes
will bo followed almost immediately by
deafening crashes of thunder. By this timo
probably a heavy rain will be falling, vary
ing at intervals in intensity. Tho storm will
continuo from one-half to about two or
three hours, when tho lightning and thun
der will diminish and disappear, and tho
rain-fall will gradually cease. When Wo now
venture out wo shall encounter a cool, re
freshing broczo, which will at onco havo an
invigorating effect upon us. Tho rays of
tho sun breaking hero and thero through
tho clouds and falling upon tho rain-dropa
on tho grass and trees, will givo to tho sur
roundings the most pleasing asf oct.
Having briefly described tho thunder
storm as wo all seo it, lot us now investi
gate what wo havo seen. While tho thunder-storm
was doveloplng the air was op
pressive and wo felt languid and uncomfort
able. This was duo to tho great amount of
molsturo with which tho air was saturated,
together with tho high temperature. Tho
wrxm, vnpor-ladon atmosphere, expanded
by neat ana rising to a hignor altitude, was
replaced by coolor air flowing in under it.
This accounts for tho refreshing atmosphere
which wo experienced. Tho great amount
of moisture in tho air during tho develop
ment of tho storm accounts for tho lack of
Its transparency, and also for tho Indistinct
